HEY!!! Pokémon kicks ass. As far Yellow anyway, maybe Gold and Silver cause they have the original 150 at least. The new ones can go suck a dick though.

Anyway, A.o.E. (or any game made by Ensemble actually) or Total War. The Warcraft series is good too.

Although they made a very unnecessary sequel for PS1 and unnecessary remake on PSP

As awesome as that game is, I wouldnt count it a series for the reasons you gave. Man, Id love to play that game again.

Final Fantasy? I dunno, the joy of the FF games is the story more than the "game". I beat FF 3/6 and 7 numerous times but it wasn't largely thanks to the joy of the process.

i would say the Final Fantasy series, at least to me, everyone of the games have given me an average of 50 hours gameplay, and for number 7-10 its been more like 150-200 hours

Guess I'm an old timer, but the Ultima series was great up to Ultima VIII Pagan which was ok, and then Ultima IX wasn't bad once they worked out the bugs,and then Ultima Online became the first MMORPG and is still going. Hard to beat that history.
