Hello escapist, from being someone almost too bored of game in general and always hate to see the most of the recent game being released just a rehash version of the previous or even with that bandwagon of re-release in HD older games.
At some point I feel like some game development give too much work on certain thing games need, for example when I saw that video showing the new "super" realistic look on wolf fur, I was like "Who care?". Am I becoming cynical to all game, Am I becoming a "bad" player for not caring about how my character look, how realistic graphic look, how much achievement point I have, can't I play a game to have fun?
Why are most game transforming "in game cheats" with "pay to cheat"
Or why most Facebook game are all about having "real life time" as currency (wait or pay), I don't see how it incentive me of paying a dime, because after all there no end to that bottomless pit, you can spent 1000$ and still be blocked by those random fake wall of "wait".
Am I crazy because I hate more and more game development because of greed.
Sometimes when I see game developer like for Tomb Raider "We haven't made enough money", I am barely touched and tell myself "If you haven't spent so much on marketing and spent maybe too much on graphic design"
I think it all come to, if game developer want to make money they mostly should not waste money of "useless" development, are character customization that important, why does a player want to take 15 minute to assemble the perfect looking character when in game you can barely see the difference.
Are destructible environment or similar "nice to see but not necessary" that important to enjoy a game.

After all, is greed killing great design?

ps: I'm sorry for the weird explanation of all my ideas going all over the place

You must be new here.

Greed isn't killing great design, there's plenty of great design going on outside of the AAA industry; people are too quick to dismiss the indie scene as 'pretentious' just because they try new things and aren't always successful.

Also, there is no need to be so presumptuous about what is fun and what isn't. Some people enjoy character customisation, I know I do. Paying for character customisation not so much. Also, graphics aren't irrelevant. True, ultra-realism and inflated budgets for visuals are shooting gaming in the foot, but graphics aren't irrelevant. A good design aesthetic works wonders. Not many newer games I've played look more impressive than Dark Souls.

I thought people thought they were "pretentious" because of asshats like Blow and Fish.
Yeah, but that's the designers being pretentious (Fish isn't really all that pretentious, just a bit of a dick and unable to handle himself on the internet, apparently), not the games themselves. I get the impression that some people think of indie games as pretentious in themselves. For what reason I don't know.

In other words, greed is killing great design just in the AAA industry.

Thus why it's important to make people aware that there is more to gaming than the AAA industry.
