Edit - Damnit, give me a minute to type this.

Recently I came upon the discovery that certain restaurants use a process of adding the tip into the bill. I find this incredibly dishonest and immoral. Sorry we live in a society where a tip is to be expected regardless of how well a job a server does. Give me a good smile, a good attitude, bring my meals at a decent rate, and I tend to tip well. But I have to be honest, at no point should I have to fork over the cash of a tip when it is already on the bill without my knowledge.

This was going to have a poll, but my enter button entered the fight. Get it?
Anyway, your opinions please.

Hidden Pro Tip: Everywhere you go on the internet, by default, a single line input box will submit the page form. Exceptions are when pages are validated for fields - processing that the escapist intentionally ignores. Never use enter to go from one field to another, always use tab.

Unless your a beancounter, then it depends on your program and your base OS - but that's not the internet.

/hidden pro tip

Edit: I don't tip, if I see it on a bill I will fight it, I pay for what I eat, they already mark prices up to account for service. I'm an Australian though, tipping is not our nature (see that other thread about whether we should do it or not for my arguments there).

I don't tip as tipping is a gesture of pity from the rich to the poor. I am not rich.
Right?

I like watching the people that get up in arms when people don't tip. Honestly now, if you have such a serious problem with not getting tips and handouts from people you serve then get a different job.

For starters, who tips the fucking cook? The server hardly did a damn thing for me besides bring my meal, give me a pretentious smile and then enter another dimension when I need him/her most.

Though, the actual person that cooks the fucking meal, slaves and sweats over the hot skillet and gets blasted by the oven for 8+ hours straight gets no tip, no thanks and no recognition. This is the typical situation; You lay down the wad of cash and tell the waitress to thank the cook for the delicious meal. What happens? The waitress pockets the cash and goes outside for a smoke.

I used to tip, but I hardly eat at restaurants anymore. If I did, I probably wouldn't tip unless the waiter/waitress went out of their way to serve me better. Even then, it's such a ridiculous gesture.

I once gave a guy a $130 tip because he was awesome, always gave us a few minutes after finishing the meal before coming to collect the plate, was very polite, provided us with 2 free drinks each and was all round just cool. He deserved it.

I've been charged for a tip without my consent and when I saw it on the bill I complained that the waiter was slow, sloppy, poorly dressed and hardly talked at all and I shouldn't have to pay extra for such poor service, they apologized and gave the meal to me free of charge.

I've been known to tip from time to time, usually only a dollar or so, but they have to deserve it.

ProtTip: The tips added on to bills? Servers don't see shit of it. The tip you give the servers themselves? They see very little of it. Almost all restaurants require the servers to give to a 'tip share' a portion of what they sold that night. The cooks and hosts and managers split that up. Servers usually get the least tip out of the entire staff, and sometimes actually lose money because of it.

Holy cow, that guy must've shit himself at a tip that size. I know I would.
His reaction to $100 was "Are you fucking serious?" I laughed, and said "For that you just earned an extra $30." It was at a really fancy place and I knew they were used to $10-$30 tips so I though he deserved extra, and the last comment just made me realise he was just an average guy that did what he did for the sheer love of the job, so I gave him a bit extra. I could have given him anything up to $300, but yeah.

Toowoomba in Queensland, Australia. I eat anywhere as long as I have the cash, only pricey places for special occasions, such as Valentines day, anniversary, birthdays, things like that. Usually at night.

I'm a Buddhist and I believe in Karma and do a lot of A.R.K (act of random kindness). Anything from a dollar in a parking meter to stop people from getting tickets, all the way to giving massive tips, it's taken a massive toll on my wallet, but it turn, I get a lot of kindness in return.

Ahh, I see. I try my best to do the same, really. I'm not Buddhist, but I am a firm believer in altruism (good for goodness' sake). I don't have the money or means to do acts on that kind of level, though.

You could just, I don't know, READ YOUR BILL. You should do this anyway to make sure they didn't charge you for anything you didn't get and vice versa--people make mistakes sometimes.

Yep, 17, but not loaded, I get about $300 per week from work, and I do a bit of work here and there to get a little bit of extra cash.

In Australia the tip is included in the meal too. It's called the "wage", which the restaurant owner gives directly to the waiter/waitress depending on their hours. I understand America has a system whereby the tip is used in lieu of paying the service staff the kind of wage that they technically should get (apparently waiters/resses are paid below minimum wage on the understanding that tipping makes up the balance?. It's an understandable system (encourages good service rather than just loitering for the paycheck) but a totally wage-based system appeals more to me as there's no expectation or guilt involved in tipping. Tipping can still happen in Oz - it's just a pleasant surprise, given out of generosity and gratitude, not shame.
What you saw on your receipt as a mandatory tip was, if I had to guess, a bizarre way to bring the service staff's wages in line with a traditional wage while cutting out the harsher aspects of the tipping arrangement: customers who just don't tip; servers feeling spurned if they don't receive a tip; servers judging their tips according to some system of 'what's right'; ensuring the tips go to a central location for the later counting and averaging out (if the restaurant uses that system - a system that inherently creates a level of bitchiness); and so on. In other words, you're paying the serving staff what you really should be paying: their actual wage. And for the small price of taking from you the cost of what you're getting, service and all, the restaurant cuts out all the fear and loathing that comes from the tipping system.

I dislike it when the bill has the tip pre-added when the party size is any less than say 6-8 people. I don't find it dishonest, but I do find it presumptuous.

They don't up here in the U.S. Typically, small restaurants, like family run or local chains pay their servers $2-6 an hour. Basically they work for tip. What typically happens when they add a tip on the bill, its for parties over 6 people. Reason being if the server spends 2 hours taking care of the big party and they duck out on the tip, a quarter of their night is shot.
