YES!!! and i loved the book way more than the LOTR trilogy books ive read it at least 3 times over the years though i always got confused at the names of all the dwarves and who was who

It is one of my fonder literary memories, and I of course agree with what so many others have said: An easier, more comfortable read than LOTR. It's definitely one of books I have stored on my 'Stuff to read to my children'-list. I'm not saying it's only for children, few 'children's books' are, but it is extremely friendly to children, with rhyming dwarf-names, riddles and songs and so on.

Part of my warmup to the movie is to get around to reading the book in English for the first time. The only thing that niggles me a little about the movie is that Fili, Kili and particularly Thorin, look a bit un-dwarf-like. Especially when others look brilliant, like Balin.

Firstly, you have to remember the Hobbit is a children's book and not in the "Children aged 7 to 70" sense of Diana Wynne Jones, Terry Prachett or even J. K. Rowling.

Frankly, it is not very readable as an adult and anyone who comes to it the first time as an adult and who has not read any of JRR Tolkien's other works, or who expects it to be "Lord of the Rings" Volume 0 is bound to be disappointed.

Many of the aspects of Volume 1 that Jackson disliked and discarded from the movies are those that it shares with "The Hobbit". That is one of the reasons why I still think one of the directors of the "Harry Potter" movies (any one) would have been a better choice - for the movie of "The "Hobbit", that is.

The other being I don't think he is a particular good director (stupid wtf dream sequences, ham-handed 9/11 analogies, shield-surfing elves and boring, insanely long war-porn battle sequences).

All that said the trailer looked good but trailers always lie. I don't intend to see this movie, unsurprisingly.

I don't know, I already see lots that's not right. I saw a small pack of dwarves attacking some very dull sounding trolls, where as in the book The trolls conversed with each other and ambushed the dwarves one at a time.
It's not a BIG deal, but it's things like this that kind of ruined the LOTR movies for me, and I suspect the same thing will ruin the two Hobbit movies for me.
I'll still watch it, buy the dvds and enjoy the hell out of them, but that doesn't mean things won't bother me. lol

Unlike Lord of the Rings, which had to cut a good portion out (Bye bye Tom Bombadil ;., they left the majority of the cast, even adding a few names to the list. A Theory came up that suggested they're combining the original Hobbit with one of the unnamed stories that Tolken left behind, that told us about how Gandalf chose Bilbo to go on an adventure. Because of this, you'll be seeing old, and new faces, maybe even Legolas, though that's not 100% yet.

I was pissed that they left Bombadil out. He was awesome, damnit! And for the record, I think he's using stuff from Unfinished Tales and the History of Middle-Earth series, which would explain the appearence of Saruman, Galadriel, and Elrond. As for Legolas, he's Prince of Mirkwood, they visit Mirkwood, it makes sense that he might be there.

And yes, I have read The Hobbit. Did a book report on it in...fourth grade, I think.

At least I know what to get my brother for Christmas for the next 8 years or so. There will be the special edition, directors editions, collected special and collected directors and god-knows what else editions.

I thought The Hobbit was better than even LOTR itself. For one, it had a dragon.

I maintain that the hobbit is my favourite book. Peter Jackson will hopefully do the book justice and keep the story the same (or atleast similar).

I read the Hobbit in grade 8 and didn't like it. I tried to read Lord of the Rings several years later, didn't that either and quit half-way through Fellowship. While I respect JRR's style of writing, it never appealed to me. Far too verbose, especially with his descriptions.

I'm really looking forward to this movie, it seems some pretty good stuff is coming this year.

The Hobbit? Yes, I've read the Hobbit, but not LotR. I did try to, got about halfway through the Fellowship. A friend told me 'Tolkien's writing style is like watching rocks erode', and I'm inclined to agree.

Second, I dunno. The trailer seems okay, a liiiittle unsure about Martin Freeman as Bilbo, but I can't reeeeally think of anyone better, and I trust Jackson's (or whoever is responsible for casting...) judgement.

I was quite literally raised on the main Middle Earth stories (Silmarillion, Hobbit, Lord of the Rings) seeing as my mom started reading me the stories when I was three. I also inherited her obsession of reading them once a year. So when I first saw the trailer I was blown away. I can't wait to see it.

I'm a bit confused as to what Galadriel is doing in the movie, but other than that, I like it. I've been waiting a long time for this movie to get announced, and I'll definitely go and see it when it comes out.

It was one of the few books I did read as a kid. My favorite book I have ever read. I read it so many times I have lost count. I believe they will do the movie well. As they are making two movies I expect they put everything in the book into the movies. Beorn better be in it unlike how they cut Bombadil.

My feelings on the movie was estatic. I really enjoyed the book and really enjoyed seeing this trailer. I want to see it early, but know fully well I can't. Only major complaint is the actor that plays Thorin Oakenshield is a bit younger than his character (as Thorin was the oldest). But I digress...

That is one of the biggest issue I had with the casting/trailer. The age of Thorin. He wasn't young. Anyway hopefully I can overlook that when I go to see it.
