As a background to the topic, I come from an upstate New York town, one relatively untouched by the recession. However, I just got to a college town outside Denver, Colorado for a vacation, and having never been long in a town hit hard by the crisis (I visit Manhattan all the time but that doesn't count as much), I'm surprised at the sheer density of the homeless population.

Thus I wish to ask the rest of the users here, how is the economy in your town or city? Do you have few to rampant homeless populations, and how do you handle them?

EDIT: To clarify, I live in Ithaca; neither a boom town nor rust belt city, and yes, there are enough homeless on pearl street to host a modest parade.

I live in Tampa and we do have a very heavy homeless population. I volunteer at a local homeless resource/residence program so I see many of them on a frequent basis.

Victoria BC. We have very few homeless and they all seem do being doing something so that they're not homeless.

AKA Homeless Hovel. The situation is shitty.
So is Houston. You can't walk two steps without tripping over someone shouting "CHAAAAANGE?! YA GOT CHAAAAAAANGE?! Oh, come on. Help a guy out. CHANGE!". Fortunately, I live in a rich suburb outside of it.

I live in a small town in south Georgia so there are barely any homeless at all. Its really quiet surprising. I only know one. His name is Cat and he rides around on a bike, collects aluminem cans, and smells really really bad.

This city actually feels like it's still growing, slowly but surely.

I live in McMinnville, TN. They've recently blocked us off from the rest of the world, those damn homeless went zombie. I'm hold up in my house, got the 12-gauge by my side, got enough food for years.. just waiting to see what happens next.

(no that crisis hasn't affected here much)

Yo, bro, can you come help a brother out?, I know its not on the news, but if you could come down here and get me out of this place, that'd be mighty fine.

There isn't a homelessness issue where I live but when at Escapism we saw an outside Soup Kitchen while we were lost and that made me think.

We don't have any homeless, we got on a bus and played a slightly modified version of california love, so they all moved to california... after lining them up and jumping over them on a skateboard ofc.

jokes aside, we don't have a lot of homeless people in Denmark.

There used to be a guy who sat outside my flat crying into his duvet all the time, smile at him if you walk past and he makes his frown more visible. He had his hat out like he was busking but his act was just sobbing. Was a very weird bloke, I think I talked to him when I was drunk once, or it could have been another.

There are not loads of them where I live, and they aren't really a problem.
They come up to you with about a 5 minute story of how they got mugged in the park and need cash for a phone box, same woman told me the same story about 3 times seeings as I lived in the middle of town so walked through it quite frequently.

I don't mind them, don't effect me enough for me to, plus they can be good for a laugh.

Very few homeless here. But theres some WWII bunkers in the dunes by the coast near town where I know some spend the nights. I actually ran into a homeless man not too long ago. He was completely wasted asking anyone he came across for a euro or some wine. I went home and back with a bottle of whiskey that still had a little in it. I figured it'd be a good thing if this guy went back to whereever he spends the night instead of bugging everyone reeking of piss.

We don't have many homeless people here, but that's mostly due to most of the population being old canadians and people from northern states who come to live here during the winter.

Are you referring to Golden, Ft. Collins or Greeley? I can't imagine you would be talking about Boulder.

I live in a southern suburb of Denver, and things seem pretty stable here. A few more homes for sale, but overall, not so much homelessness. And when I venture into downtown Denver, I'm not seeing it there either. I'm curious where you were at. I used to live in Ft. Collins, and it would be a damn shame if that town died so quickly (although it's possible, since HP has been laying a lot of people off).

My hometown of Galt, California (Farming town) had relatively few homeless. Extremely rare to find one.

When I moved to frisco... pffft, you see them everywhere. When do you not see one taking a dump behind a bus stop, or pissing in the U.N. plaza fountain...

We have like 4-5 homeless people that I see regularly in the city centre selling big issues, none of them beg and don't really bother anyone. There are probably more in the shitty parts of the city but I don't go there as it's depressing.

I live in Sanford, Fl right now and New Smyrna, FL previously. Both towns are bad unfortunately. There are a lot of outreach programs here though.

I don't see many homeless people near home, but there are alot of beggars - like disabled people begging for money. The thing is, since I live really near Lisbon, that's where the homeless probably go to get help.

You almost never see homeless in my town, so I suppose that the recession hasn't had such a huge impact here (although it has severly impacted the distict buget).

How far upstate did you live (in relation to Albany or NYC)? Everyone seems to have their own definition of how far "upstate" New York is.
