The Humble Bundle Returns to its Roots

The Humble Indie Bundle 7 offers The Binding of Isaac, Closure, Legend of Grimrock and more.

The last Humble Bundle was a big success [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/121082-THQ-Earns-Bundle-For-Charity] but not everyone was thrilled with the THQ partnership, which in the eyes of some folks betrayed its indie mandate. But the Humble Indie Bundle 7, as the presence of the word "Indie" in the title implies, has gone back to its roots.

For the usual "pay-what-you-want" deal, you get The Binding of Isaac and the Wrath of the Lamb DLC, Closure, Shank 2, Snapshot and the feature documentary Indie Game: The Movie. Not too shabby by any measure, but things get really hot when you pay more than the average price, which nets you all of the above plus Dungeon Defenders and all its DLC, plus (and this is the part that gets me excited) the old-school dungeon crawling hit Legend of Grimrock.

Six soundtracks are included as well, although the Legend of Grimrock "soundtrack" is really just the main theme, which is pretty cool but still only one song. And with the average purchase price hovering right around six bucks, it's a steal no matter how you look at it.

Is it enough to redeem the Humble Bundle in the eyes of its "indie or bust" critics? I don't know, but it's a sweet deal and if you haven't played Legend of Grimrock yet, it's time to quit screwing around and get on with it. (I guess you may as well play some of those games while you're at it.) Already got this. And I really don't see how anybody could possibly complain about THQ doing this before. Just send all the money to humblebundle/charity. I wouldn't even care if EA did it.

I don't even care if I already own Binding of Isaac/DLC and Dungeon Defenders, I love me some game soundtracks. That being said, this is quite a deal in itself. Shank 2 in particular has caught my eye more than a few times. Now is my chance to actually play it, looks like.

I do so enjoy these frequent Humble Bundles. These guys are alright in my book.

Quick question, would someone with the Steam version of Dungeon Defenders be able to play someone with a non Steam version? Also, it says all its dlc if you pay above average, that's a lot of dlc.

I already have BoI but colour me interested for the rest of the games, except Dungeon Defenders. I'unno, just doesn't appeal. Kinda tempted to wait until the additional games are announced which is probably cheap of me, but I'm already backlogged with more games than I know what to do with so need to do anything I can to not make that worse. (Although the lack of logic is apparent because if HB add more awesome games to the bundle that make me buy it, my backlog has gone up by even more! Argh, first world problems.)

Something makes me want to call Mark of the Ninja as one of the games to be added; but I don't know if that's just hopeful optimism or what.

anyway, I prefer it when they do indie games, because it serves the double purpose of exposing me to games I might not already know/have. Not this time, but normally. Still, them not doing indie doesn't really bother me.

Well, as long as they don't call it indie, which they didn't with the THQ bundle so who really cares, right?

The bundle has both a drm free version and a Steam key, so that shouldn't be a problem. Even if it does end up going wrong with Steam multiplayer, the multiplayer can also be done through Gamespy (even though Gamespy is terrible).

Dunno about Shank, but I already own BoI and DD, so those alone make this bundle worth the money. All DLC and Grimrock? That's just a steal. Shame I already own it all.

Apart from Legend of Grimrock (which is awesome, but I already have it), the rest of the games are pretty middle-of-the-road in terms of quality. I've bought the last 4 bundles without a second's trepidation, but for now I think this one is a pass. Maybe it'll be worth it when they plug a few more games into the bundle several days into the sale, per their tradition, but as-is, not worth it for me.

Incidentally, why is the average purchase price so much higher on this bundle as opposed to the THQ one? Do people honestly believe that these games are worth more than all the AAA titles the THQ bundle gave us or are the higher averages for Mac and Linux users (who were shut out of the THQ bundle) carrying it?

Edit: Then again the average purchase price for Windows users alone in this bundle is still higher than the THQ bundle...puzzling.

For the second part: I don't know.

And in any case, The Binding of Isaac is definitely not 'middle of the road'. I'd recommend buying it just for that, even if you only pay a couple of dollars and don't bother installing the others.

I actually already have BoI (+DLC) as well. It's an alright game that is carried by the grimdark aesthetic. I keep it installed and play for a few minutes every now and then (Steam says about 2 hours total), but I don't know if I'd go so far as to call it a good game. Personal opinion of course.

I'm in no way trying to dissuade anyone from buying this bundle (again, I love the Humble Bundle), but to me it doesn't compare to, say, Humble Bundle V where we got 8 games that were each outstanding in their own right. As I see it, the drop in overall quality compared to previous bundles is enough for me to shy away from buying this one.

Anyone have opinions on this?

it makes it considerably harder (IMO) but not broken by any means. the game will still be enjoyable, the learning curve might be a bit more extreme though. if you can find a way to install the base game WITHOUT the dlc first - which it should do anyway, with a steam key and then a dlc key - do that, but don't pass up a game like that for that reason. it is a fantastic game, and bloody addictive xD

I hate the titling on this article. People were being stupid when complaining about the fact that the THQ bundle wasn't "indie". Indie has nothing to do with Humble Bundle. That is a popular misconception. The company isn't Humble Indie Bundle, it's Humble Bundle. The Humble Indie Bundle is a product they sell. Everything they do is "Humble" because people can give all the money to charity and developers/publishers are not looking to make money off of it, but looking to raise money for charity by essentially giving away their products for free.

OT: The plague of supporting indie is that I own all but one of these games. Some of them I own multiple times even.

Actually, that may not be possible. Steam automatically installs any owned DLC, and Humble gives you one code that registers everything to your account.

I actually own the base game already, and I've put a fair number of hours in; I'm asking because I have only beaten the full game 4 times, all with Cain. I already find BoI challenging, so I don't see why I should make it harder on myself just yet.
