Are Shmups (traditional shoot em ups) becoming extinct in modern gaming?

I love the old shooters both for nostalgic reasons and for gameplay reasons but I have never heard them discussed here on the Escapist. There are several remade versions for download, i.e. Ikaruga (thankyou :D) but I have yet to see a new IP using the style. The current tendency seems to be arena based dual stick shooters.

So I ask, is it just me who misses these sort of games?
Does anyone have a particular favourite shmup they used to, or still, play?

I love Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun, Uridium. Jets and Guns was good too (Machinae Supremacy did an awesome soundtrack for it)

Well, personally speaking, no, I don't miss them. Maybe that's just because I was never good at one. Granted, it's true. Still, personally speaking I've never been a fan. Though I wouldn't say they should disappear either. The outdated form of shooter I always loved was the rail shooter, and that seems to be on the way out too (unless you own a Wii... I don't). Still, it would be nice to see people try to create new and original IP's with both of these gameplay forms.

I miss them
I really like Shooters and Hell Shooters.
Ikaruga was one of my favorites.

Touhou project is a really great Series of Hell Shooters.
And when i say Hell....

Well, what exactly makes it a traditional shoot 'em up? The inability to move your gun ala Doom and Wolfenstien?
By shoot 'em up he means side or forward scrolling shooters (you are usually a jet or spaceship), not fps or third person shooters.

OT: I love the Darius games.

Keynote: Start with 9, I'd consider it the easiest of them. (It's the only one I can beat on Lunatic)

I'm going to re-direct you to Touhou.
No need :D

I haven't played all of them but I managed to get hold of two. Shoot The Bullet is insane.
