I was just talking to my friend about music and sudenly he says that my music taste is bad because I like mainstream music, I try to tell him that I like balance. so he tells me that I have been brain washed by marketing groups.

so what do you think of these guys who only like indie and move on when they become sucseful.

I think people should judge things on their own merits, not all mainstream media is crap and at the same time not all indie movies/music are hidden gems.

Such people aren't 'indie', they're 'hipsters'. Basically, the kind like me, who is indie, are the sort who don't care what anyone thinks and likes whatever they want without anyone else telling them otherwise. The 'hipsters' are the ones like your friend, and are usually pretentious elitists anyway. Just ignore the guy, if you like mainstream stuff as well as obscure stuff then that doesn't make you any less indie at all.

Ehh, I'm an aging indie fan. When Iw as in school, I took slack for liking bands that eventually became famous, some of them I still liked, some I didn't.

I think yer friend is trying too hard to be badass by pretending he's not.
It's cool to be brooding, in other words.

He'll grow out of it (maybe...). Just shrug and keep enjoying wot you like.

Music should be a matter of taste, not image. Sure I like a lot of 'indie' stuff but so long as they still sound the same I don't care how famous they get. I hate music that sounds like a mangled mess that has been farted though a synthesizer (ie, most 'mainstream' stuff) because there's no talent there, no art, just a load of sound distorting software. But I don't hate it "Because it's like... mainstream dude", I hate it because it's awful.

Yeah, that's annoying.
I think songs of all genres have potential be equally good, so why not judge every song individually?
I'm not the kind to listen to one band either. I normally pick and choose songs I like, regardless of band or genre.

people that blindly follow mainstream tripe like katy perry/rhianna/lady gaga without giving any thought into their musical pallate= uninteligent sheep

people that blindly only listen to crap no one has ever listened to because they like being alternative but then parrot their disgust of mainstream stuff beacuse its popular= complete wankers

sometimes stuff is popular because its good but quite often its just because its bland enough to appeal to a bigger audience so in conclusion put some actual thought into what you listen to

if your tates say either:
1)I'm just like everyone else!
2)I'm so meta!People have no idea what I listen to!

then something has gone wrong

Sturgeon's Law says that 90% of everything is crap, this includes "indie" music, films, etc. Your friend is an idiot. Ignore him and listen to whatever you like.

Yeah, your friend is just a hipster, someone who works hard to intentionally be non-conformist. The irony of course is that non-conformism is itself a form of conformism, it's more of a "reverse-conformism". He just thinks he's being cool if he never listens to mainstream music, but really, who gives a fuck?

Just listen to whatever you want, let your friend judge music based on what he thinks it'll make other people think about him.

Well, basically that.

Anyone who tries to tell you that you've been brainwashed that doesn't have a PhD in psychiatry is a douchebag that's talking out of their arse. Besides, being conciously non-conformist is really conforming, but conforming to a different (and far more pretentious) set of tastes. That guy isn't a special little flower because he hates popular music just because it's popular, he's just a dick.

There's no debate, just opinion as far as music's concerned. People will complain they can't heard a melody, or they can't hear the bass. It's too complicated, it's not simple or catchy enough. Guitar solos are boring, guitar solos rock...

I try not to dismiss stuff, but I don't own a TV or listen to music radio much, so to be honest I don't get exposed to a lot fo new music, and I've already got a fair range. I know what I like, after trying seemingly every genre, if not every sub-genre.
