3DS Buzz is already down in protest.

That's..not that dramatic, to be honest, it's like a local convenience store trying to declare independence. The fact that google searches are built into firefox and chrome URL bars is a bit more important. However, a vast proportion of sites that people actually use for content, not methods of accessing content, are still up. I mean, seriously, no one actually gets news or entertainment from wiki, reddit or google, they just find links to other places from there. The other places will still be up.
I was just listing another website doing what it can.

What have you done that is of any importance, at last they did what they could.
I've secured a well-paying job with News Corporation. I'd call that important =D All I'm saying is that no one is quaking in terror that a site dedicated to the 3DS is going offline for a few hours.
I'm not sure if I'd admit that around here; people hate Newscorp on this site, although they tend to mistakenly call it Fox News when talking about its TV arm[footnote]even when they're actually referring to the local stations that are owned by Newscorp, but separate from the national Fox News.[/footnote], and The Daily Mail when they're talking about the news papers. Plus, I doubt Mr. Murdoch would approve of one of his employes publicly /dis/approving of SOPA.

1) I don't care what people think about Newscorp on this site, or by extension, what they think of me.

2) When did I say I was against SOPA, remind me?

That was kind of my point. If you do approve of it, you're a shill for Murdoch. If you don't, your bosses won't like it if it ever gets back to them. Lose-lose, unfortunately for you.

Remind me again why I care what people who aren't paying me for my time think of me? The reasoning behind SOPA is sound, the way it's being implemented is somewhat heavy handed and is the reason that there's a strong opposition to it.

You work for Newscorp. It's ultimately the public that pays for your time, since they're the ones that watch ads and buy newspapers. But what I was really getting at here is that getting a job with Newscorp is not something that people are going to congratulate you for, unless it's just a "congrats on getting a job in this market" type thing. You said you had a job there when someone asked you what you had done that was worthy of note. I pointed out that on this site, it's not something that the average user would see as something to be proud of.

I would very much like to get a demographic breakdown of the average user of this website. If the public's widely held belief about gamers (thanks EA, thanks so much) is even remotely accurate, I think we can agree that not being held in esteem by the aforementioned hypothetical demographic isn't actually a problem.

You know, I actually agree with you there (seriously, most gamers don't give a crap about politics, and most of the rest are liberals, with the odd libertarian floating around), but that brings us back to your original post: if you don't care what gamers think about you, why brag to them about getting a job with a company that you know they (generally) hate?

Edit: Wait a minute, did you just subtly blame EA for Fox's coverage of Mass Effect? Dude, you /must/ work for Newscorp. That's exactly the kind of spin that they pay good money for, and I'm both sickened and impressed.

First of all, that's not the problem, the problem with most gamers is that we don't actually give a damn about differing opinions enough for it to matter. What's the biggest problem we currently have in the industry? Piracy. What's everyone most willing to discuss? Whether Steam is better than Origin (It totally is). Once people start wanting to talk about issues that aren't so self-centred, perhaps we'll get a better reputation in the general public, and then the general public might care about what we think of them. For the purpose of this scenario, assume that I am part of the general public.

In addition, who's bragging? The man (possibly) asked for accomplishments of note. I find that an accomplishment of note. If I was bragging I'd have added the bit about the private yacht, the helicopter and the weekend access to the ISS that we enjoy.

EDIT: Because you misunderstood me

The MPAA are saying that these blackouts being done by big websites are an abuse of power, and are being done to further their own corporate interests.

I have no words for this.

If you don't want to click on the link, here's what the chairmen of the MPAA said:

It is an irresponsible response and a disservice to people who rely on them for information and use their services. It is also an abuse of power given the freedoms these companies enjoy in the marketplace today. It's a dangerous and troubling development when the platforms that serve as gateways to information intentionally skew the facts to incite their users in order to further their corporate interests.
Yes, this is real and he actually said this.

Again, I have no words.

I think we found who Cool Kid's real life identity is.

Seriously, I hope the blackout gives a reminder of what will happen if SOPA passes.

Yeah I'm sure that three major content gateways will be arbitrarily shut down under SOPA. That could totally happen.

hmm, getting my motherboard tomorrow/today, hope this doesn't hinder me too much, but on the plus side, sopa should be stopped and one of the best ways of doing that is getting as many people against it as possible and that is exactly what this is achieving. It needs a major rework before it will be acceptable if not just completely scrapped.

Well as of 9:00pm Pacific time, Wikipedia has been down and will remain down until 9 tomorrow. I heard that Reddit and BoingBoing are also particapating. There's not much us as individual's can do, except mass spam our representative. If you go to Wiki now they'll help you.

I actually came on here to see if the Escapist was also going offline.

I was wondering the samething.
I think it'd just be preaching to the choir, if the Escapist went down. But it would be interesting to see what would happen, seeing how Wednsday is always high-traffic day.

Google is still up... so only Wikipedia is blacked out for a day?

Not really a monumental event...

EDIT: LOL

Even the pirate sites are still up. Too funny!
At least Google blacked out their doodle and had a "stop SOPA" message at the bottom. Hardly as big of a move as they needed to make if they really wanted to raise awareness, though. Wordpress is also down, or at least the main page has been replaced with a message about SOPA on it. I'm wondering why Reddit, Newgrounds, and CIA.gov are still up, though. CIA.gov is the least surprising; I don't think they can voluntarily do that, the name was probably inserted by a prankster -- maybe even one who plans on doing an anonops style takeover of the front page. Reddit and Newgrounds are a bit more surprising, though.

Edit: Daily Kos's take is entertaining, though. It starts out clean, but then the text gradually gets covered in what looks like a black magic marker. Think "statement redacted."

Which response do you choose?
Horray! Fight da powah everyone! We gotta work together!
Damn, not sure if I can get through a day without Wikipedia.
This probably won't affect shit...
I say we attack Congress.

Hm... blue's a retarded slacktivist, green's trying to be funny and failing, orange is probably trolling, and red is trying to get me arrested. Lets see what the other colors think...

As long as the porn stays I'm ok with whatever.
WHY IS EVERYONE AGAINST THIS BILL?
This will probably work.
I hope this turns out ok. I don't want anyone else to lose their jobs over this. <white text
Oh man, I hope MLP stays up!
WTH is Reddit? I'll go check Wikipedia... *Wikipedia is down* AAAAHHHHHHH!!!
Hands up if you've actually read the bill.

Ugh, I guess I'll go with yellow.

And yes, I'm going to retry this stupid gimmick thing.

The Escapist is one of the places that actually discusses these issues for internet junkies. Other sites, like Wikipedia, have a wider apeal, and are doing their part by telling the masses, "Hey, you need us. Please don't let them take away our rights."

Completely different roles in fighting SOPA and other bills like it.
