I just spent two days downloading and making two videos work failing on three others. By downloading codecs, a new mediaplayer, codec finder tool, something that speedsup downloads, a data... fixer, and several non working downloads, best of all everything needs to be unzipped with seven zip so i had to download that as well. I have fixed everything and then some downloaded ever free quick fix tool and every performance enhancing steroid for my computer that is free and i still am having problems.

Why would people do this or maybe the guys putting the videos online have some all powerful machine that randomly generates a video format and we all have to guess to figure it out. I saw plenty of things that i could pay to be able to download and run easily but i'm a cheap bastard and found it all for free. So my question is why would they run so many different formats and why would probably the most common video player windows media player not run most of these vids. I'm starting to think windows hates me because i'm really starting to hate it. I think someone needs to get all the free ware guys to join togethor into one mega package. Emulators, codecs, players, service packs, fix packs etc... and any with overlapping goals join togethor to make it a better experience... and maybe one compressed video format because thats what pisses me off the most.

Windows is notorious for that. Good for gaming, bad for compatibility because theres so many different combinations. VLC is good for playing most video types though.
Beat me to it. VLC singlehandedly redeemed my POS laptop in my eyes.

Like it makes no since why everything is on the internet yet in 50 million different locations. why they couldn't just have one set site with everything on it. Finding these tools on the internet is the hardest part for me(working preferablly). I don't expect help i have it mostly figured out.

The good thing about problems like this is that there's almost always someone out there with the skills to solve the problem for free.

For this problem, they made VLC [http://www.videolan.org/vlc/].

Surely it should be "Sense" though? Maybe I'm just not getting it

Net Neutrality. Sadly, or fortunately depending on your views, the internet is not just a tool. It is a place to express yourself. A place to do whatever you want and make whatever you want. Having everything on one megasite just defeats the purpose. Plus that megasite would run horribly, considering it has EVERYTHING ON THE INTERNET on it.

It's because of a lack of standards. I was talking about this with my former boss one time, computers and the internet are largely unregulated. Unlike say the auto industry which has standards for various things such as..... well I don't know I'm not a car guy; but anyway the computer and internet to a large degree are not, although it it's a lot better then it used to be. Things have begun to get standardized like networking protocols and such, but I believe nobody's standardized video formats yet leaving it up to the various companies to decide what to use or to come up with their own if they want.

VLC Homepage

VLC Player, and K-Lite Codec Pack. It maximizes compatibility, and lets you play damn near everything.

Honestly, I haven't had a video I couldn't play in almost 2 years after switching to VLC.

Edit: Fucked up the links; fixed.

I hope you aren't still running Vista. That's 99% of your problem right there. Since switching to Windows 7 and installing Media Player Classic [http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Media_Player_Classic.htm], Real Alternative [http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm], and QuickTime Alternative [http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm], I have yet to have any problems with compatibility.

"The internet doesn't make since to me", you're a kiwi?!

CCCP and VLC will pretty much fix anything you can throw at it. :)

Indeed, for the sake of my sanity, I'm going to choose to believe they were being ironic.

For the lack of capital "I"s I can assume that he wasn't.

Perhaps English isn't his first language.

We shall see.
