This study found only an association between weight and computer use. "Is it that you become overweight because you use the Internet a lot, or is it that overweight people simply use the Internet more?" says Corneel Vandelanotte, Ph.D., postdoctoral research fellow at the Institute for Health and Social Science Research at Central Queensland University. It's hard to say. But one likely explanation, she adds, is that "people who use the Internet a lot also engage more in other

Uh... What?

The Internet is not a primary factor in whether or not you're overweight; it's simply another medium for distraction from exercise, like vidjamagames, books, movies, television, writing, knitting, etc. What's with this distinction between Interwebs and other sedentary activities?

Will I remain at my healthy weight so long as I never play Civ IV online?

Or is it that fat people spend too much time on the internet?

Would you care to enlighten us with your 80 Paladin, Mr. Newell?

DISCUSSION TOPIC:

What's up with this study? Legit or not so much? Is the Internet fundamentally different from other sedentary activities (Such as reading)?

This is amazing. I can understand people who have no proper scientific education not knowing the difference between causation and correlation, but you actually plucked out the part of the article where they explain it and you still didn't figure it out.

The internet doesn't make you fat... spending TOO MUCH TIME on the internet makes you fat, so does spending too much time with TV, video games, hell even reading books too much can make you fat for that matter.... smarter, but fat. Too much of anything is bad for you.

Almost any activity that isn't an almost-criminally-insane jog and "minor" injury is going to result in some form of weight gain...

If you're done acting high and mighty, maybe you'd like to enlighten me as to why you're apparently incapable of realizing a small amount of sarcasm? Or perhaps what I did to make myself seem like an absolute fool in your eyes?

Or maybe (le gasp) respond to the discussion question rather than my silly little quips?

My weight has always been in proportion with my height. I've been 115lbs (give or take a pound or two) for the last 4 years and I never seem to get any heavier than 118 or any lighter than 111.

You quoted the part of the article where they explain that a correlation between heavy use of the internet and obesity does not necessarily mean that heavy use of the internet is a determining factor in obesity, and then proceeded to point out that very thing as if you were somehow revealing something damaging the credibility of the study. Maybe I'm missing something, but that's what I got.

I don't see any evidence that there is anything wrong with this study, and I'm really not about to hunt it down and criticize its methods.
