The ~ key

Hello, people of the escapist. I have a problem that you may be able to solve.
In oblivion the ~ key does not work so consol commands do not work. I have given up on it and I have played oblivion enough times that it would take to overthrow the U.S.A. but that is beside the point. On the internets I have read that infa-red reciever things in vista (yes I will be getting Windows 7 soon just bear with me.) will fuck with the ~ key.
Now I want to get fallout 3 on the pc for the console commands. Spawning shit and watching as Megaton is not destroyed by a nuke but by 3 supermutant behemoths and then looting their bodies seems like loads of fun, but does the same thing apply? Is it still possible that the ~ key will not work and have the same problem that Oblivion had? Please can someone (much smarter than me which is pretty easy) help me?

It's always ` but People say it's ~ because that's easier to notice.

This English(American?) setup is the most common, and I think it defaults to that in the windows settings.
From some limited testing, most games will actually default the keyboard to English(United States) but since I don't have a Bethesda game installed I can't be sure if they fail to do the same.

Yep ive heard of problems like this. try these 2 steps
1. Browse through your oblivion.ini located in my documents/my games/oblivion and look through oblivion.ini for a line called benableconsole=0 or something like that, then change the 0 to a 1

2. if this fails to rectify your problem or it is all ready enabled then download this mod.

I needed the ~ key working before and here is how you make it work on vista:

Start- Control Panel- System and Maintenance- Device Manager- And you unistall the Misrosoft eHome infrared thing. Then launch the game and enjoy your supermutants or whatever it is you want to enjoy
And dont worry after each restart your PC/laptop will auto-install the infrared. Just remember to un-istall before each play.

I've found that in some games you need to enable console first.

The tilde key is the § key on some keyboards.

When they say the ~ key, they generally mean on U.S. keyboards. For UK keyboards, it's the `/¬ key, just to the left of the '1' and under 'Esc'.
