A Hermit's Cave
OK, would like to address two things here (because it was nagging at me for bit this afternoon):

1. Was the issuing of the Laconia Order a war crime?
2. Did anyone watch the TV drama 'the Sinking of the Laconia' that was on earlier this year (BBC2)? If so, what did you think?

1. Normally, I would say that it was, but given that Nimitz said he'd've done the same thing, I'm left wondering... still.
2. Yes, I did, and it was OK. However, the one thing that needled at me very, very, very, very severely, was the portrayal of the American bomber crew which brought down the general quality of the show (even though they only turned up for about fifteen minutes). They were done up as trigger happy jocks who just want to drop bombs. Usually, I wouldn't have a problem with this (because I 'hate' Americans, like most Europeans and enjoy a chuckle at them every so often). However, this time, it just didn't sit well with me, I suppose because it was a WWII drama and their lines just killed the general mood set by the preceding scenes (USAAF personnel weren't this level of twat, were they?! *shakes head*). And also because I thought, if I want to watch American airforce personnel = total pricks, I'll watch Pearl Harbour (shit film, go watch Tora!Tora!Tora! no discussion please), but with something like the Laconia Incident, it was plain *uuuuuuuuuughh*

So for all those who watched the show, what did you think? Do you reckon the portrayal (of the Americans at least) was utter BS, like me? Or did you think it was a crap show?

PS. Thomas Kretschmann as Papa Donitz (great casting choice there)

Although it was at most a war crime, and at least a very dubious decision to clear the attack the German u-boot, which is a military asset, muddied the waters by showing a Red Cross flag, which is legally perfidy.
