The Last of Us is a autobiographical self fulfilling prophecy. I'm pretty sure some sort of apocalypse is definitely incoming now that a game without a number or secondary title at the end of it has sold well.

But in all seriousness, hopefully this is some kind of signal to the industry that if it does better it will be rewarded for it. Of course taking into account that the last call of duty sold over double that on launch day I'm not too optimistic.

I'm glad to see they're doing well. I just finished my first play through today and I was really impressed. The Last of Us has earned it's praise. Someone above said the game was overhyped and I would have to disagree. It surpassed all of my expectations.

That doesn't mean I want a sequel, just more games of this quality.
Maybe a game in the Bioshock or Final Fantasy sense of a sequel. A similar experience in an entirely new setting, with new characters and a new story.
You're right, that could be very interesting. Actually, I wouldn't mind playing a sequel set in another country entirely. We've seen the US and it's collapse, now it would be kind of cool to see how things are going somewhere else. That would provide some great setting and visual opportunities too.
