The Last Stand alternatives?

Hey!

I've played way too much The Last Stand from DoW 2: Retribution, too much to have all classes at max level. But I love the "genre" which is why I'm asking:

Is there any alternative, preferable a game that is made like something similar, that focuses on the same type of gameplay, with EXP, you get new items, powers etc? I know there are mods for example Starcraft 2 and other games, but they weren't as good as TLS.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Edit: Oh, and the game has to support at least two players online. :)

The Last Stand is basically horde mode for RTS. The closest another RTS comes to it is the MOBA scene, but Last Stand is distinct enough that I don't think it really has any competitors.

As an aside, what's your favorite hero to play as? I'm partial to the Shas'O Commander and the Lord General.

Sure, you could say that it's a horde mode for RTS, but with a few fun added RPG elements with the EXP, gain abilities, armor, weapons and equipment when you level up.

I was playing some mod for Starcraft 2 called The Last Stand (very original, huh) which was basically the exact same thing with other heroes and abilities of course. Besides the heroes, the gameplay was exactly the same, timed rounds for points, two places to hold for bonus points etc.

It was okay but not as good as the real deal. There has to be something more out there than TLS, the mod for DoW2 and the SC2 mod.

To answer your question I think my favorite hero is the Farseer with her group teleport which can save the day. Or the Tyrant which is pretty much invulnerable with a specific build. Great for tanking and reviving teammates when there are shitloads of enemies around. :)

I love both the general and the Shas'O for how much firepower they can dish out, but they do it very differently. The Shas'O is just a walking death machine with the right build. Plasma Gun or Burst Cannon, Anti Tank Missile Pod, explosive drone, coolant injectors and the kinetic pulse shield utterly devastate tyranid waves.

As for the Lord General, on his own he sucks, but when backed up by a guardsman squad wielding his chosen weapon, he can suddenly dish out a torrent of fire. Then you give him air strikes and a refractor shield.

I prefer using the Chaos Sorcerer build where you nick other units and use them to fight with you, and then having an anti-character build with whatever is left.

The problem with your question is that there really isn't an answer. The Last Stand is pretty much a one of a kind type of game. Apart from it and a Starcraft Mod, I'm at a loss for what to tell you.

I just wish that Relic would put out some more maps for it. Bloodied Coliseum and Anvil of Khorne are great, but it would be cool to see some more with unique circumstances and cool spins.

Me too, I'd love it if Relic decided to make more content for TLS. Not only maps, but a couple of new heroes and a lot of new abilities and equipment too. And with it probably increase the level cap.

But yeah, it seems like there isn't any game like it (apart from the Starcraft mods and DoW2 mods) which is too bad. I'm sure I read somewhere that TLS was very popular and most of my friends have played it pretty much, even before I found out about it.

What's even better is the 7? pricetag of TLS on Steam (almost for free during some sales). As it's a standalone game, you'd think that Relic could throw out some more content. Especially since it doesn't have any story/quests or anything else that would take a lot of work. Creating a few new maps, characters and abilities wouldn't take that long compared to a few new missions for the campaign.

There is operation stonewall for company of heroes (I think you need the expansions), you don't have a single hero unit but you protect the area and surrounding buildings (Which give you bonuses for holding them) from increasingly difficult waves of enemies using the arsenal of the allies/axis forces depending on who you chose.

That's all I can think of. It's a great game mode but not specifically what you stated, I think TLS for DOW II is unique for now :/

I play as the Captain (Mainly cause he's my only max level hero) with plasma gun, jetpack, insta revive and of course the mighty dreadnought!

I'm leveling up my Chaos sorcerer next, I'm doing the classic doppelganger build, Only level 9 :*(

Oh by the way, Company of heroes is 80% off on steam, if you were thinking about getting it, I'd say now is the best time >.<

DOTA is a very similar format. It might be worth checking it and DOTA 2 (when its released) out.

And yes the Tau commander is a walking death machine, its my preferred class in the last stand. Its great if you catch all the eldar banshees in the spread of your dual burst cannon and they all get suppressed and die before ever reaching melee range.
My buddy usually plays the lord general for the trooper meat shields.

I also have a lower level mekboy with the exploding teleporter build. Its amazing against pretty much anything, you just teleport around the map and everything around you explodes. It works so well vs groups of melee mobs.

There's a few Warcraft III custom maps (like enfo's) like that, but they don't have overarching character levelling.

Yeah I wouldn't mind some other games like that either, it's pretty fun to play.

On the topic of builds my favorite is a Hive Tyrant with Scything Talons, Reinforced Chitin, 3 Pets (Warrior, Ravener, Tyrant Guard) and Evolution. The result is a ok-ish Tyrant with nigh-unstoppable minions (not exaggerating, the Tyrant Guard alone can solo most of the superheavies.)

Honestly if you want overarching levelling with your party based combat you want to be looking into playing a party based MMO. Dungeons and Dragons online (free to play)does gameplay similiar to this, where its entirely about being in an stance and you and your party members go off and do a quest in this isolation, including a few with do the wave based survival mode but nothing that exactly matches the Retribution game mode. Upside is you dont have to deal with the rubbish DoW2 engine!

Yeah, I already own Company of Heroes but I hadn't tried that mode (haven't played the game much at all actually) with two friends and it was pretty fun.

Like you said, not at all as TLS, but still fun. Thanks! And for anyone that didn't already know it's very cheap right now.

Yeah, no, I've been playing too much Dota 2 and both me and my friends are bored of the MOBA genre. I guess the similarity is the character selection and that you have different abilities and equipment, but it's not close enough. Thanks though, any tip is good. :)

If all I wanted was the leveling with my party, I could play any RPG/game with RPG elements with co-op. :p

What's so rubbish about the DOW2 engine? I've found it to be quite sable and incredibly well animated for an RTS. The AI sucks balls, however, but that doesn't have anything to do with performance.

Well it takes a really different form but the "Nord Invasion" mod for Mount and blade: Warband is a similar concept at its core. Obviously the combat style is completely different but it has the horde attacking and your character leveling up and getting new gear and abilities (healing and barricading at the moment.) It's a fun little mod thats still under development and it wouldn't cost you much to acquire (since the new price for warband is 20$.)

Otherwise I can't really think of anything.

My favorite class was always the sorcerer, bamfing around and shredding my foes was always good for a laugh.
