We all face horrible things as we grow older: breakups, the deaths of loved ones, etc. However, sometimes it's the little things that hit the hardest. For example, I was closing my garage today, getting ready for a daily jog, when I heard a series of small chirping noise. I looked down, an sitting upon my driveway was a small, jet-black bundle of feathers. A little baby bird. It had fallen out of its nest and wandered into my driveway.
I walked over to my recycling bin to fish out a piece of paper to slide underneath the bird (so I could carry it). I placed the paper on the ground next to the bird and slipped it forward, under its feet. It flipped over onto the paper, chirping frantically and tumbling about. Suddenly, I was heartbroken. I sat down on the pavement and stared at the bird for a while as it sat on the paper, continuing to chirp. Judging by the quality of its feathers it was only about a week old, and judging by the size of its feet, it was some sort of small songbird. I knew then and there that the bird would die: its mother would not be able to put it back into the nest (I don't think any birds carry their young, anyway) and the bird was too young to eat solid food, so I couldn't feed it. I sat there for ten minutes, just watching the bird, before picking up the paper and placing the bird in the grass, away from the path of my car. I then tried to go for a jog, but all I could manage was some sort of shuffling walk. I thought about the bird all the while, and when I came back the bird had wandered away. I felt terrible.
Now, a bird falling out of its nest is a small thing, but it had a huge impact on me, as you can see by me devoting a thread to it. I'd like to know: what small things have hit you hard? Maybe something you read in the paper, maybe a picture you saw in the somewhere... Maybe I'm just a wuss, and none of you get hit hard by things like this, but I'd like to know.
