Fast rail transport all over the place, with local light rail and buses all integrated so there's no missing one train by three minutes and waiting eighty-seven for the next one. Make it so fast it's quicker than flying, taking into account check-in, security, going to gate, boarding, baggage reclaim and the like. Include wheelchair, big luggage, cargo and bicycle space on every train. Subsidise pedal-powered vehicles to reduce congestion, reduce emissions and keep people fit. As an added bonus, we'd stop killing so many children on the roads every year. You know Britain's lost a greater percentage of its population in the form of 5-16-yr-olds killed on the roads since 11/09/2001 than the USA lost in crashes and collapses that day?
Having got rail transport into place, exchange trips and pen-pals everywhere. Let's have every child in Europe live for a fortnight with a family in another European country aged 10-12 or thereabouts and then do it again in another country aged 13-15 and again on another continent aged 16-18. Have gap year kids volunteering all over the place overseas. Make it normal. Have the same numbers of kids the same age coming in for visits the same length too. Get as many countries involved as possible. By the time people are old enough to join the armed forces, they'll have been to Germany, Italy and Vietnam or France, Slovakia and Chile or Denmark, Norway and Canada and it'll be a lot harder to dehumanise another people in their minds ... and all those other countries will have had British, French, German, Italian, Slovakian et cetera children staying there and their children will have visited countries here. The USA and Canada can join in, too, although with the oceans in the way they might want to make it three weeks. Next time someone wants to recruit jihadis, they're going to have to look somewhere the kids don't have Western friends. If you have to build them an internet cafe, a satellite uplink and a big solar array, so be it.
Everyone in Britain vote Liberal Democrat. Alright, so some people are always going to vote Green no matter what and some are always going to vote UKIP no matter what and some are always going to vote BNP no matter what and some are going to vote Fundamentalist Christian Totalitarian Chauvinist Puritan no matter what and some are even going to vote Labour no matter what, but if everyone who hasn't effectively appointed a party as their proxy votes Lib-Dem Labour are going to sink out of government right past opposition and into obscurity, and that'll scare the **** out of them and the conservatives whoever wins. It'll take us away from the two-party system that served four hundred and seventeen very rich Americans so well and disenfranchised the other three hundred million, which has to be a good start, and it'll mean we have two different parties in government, which at present we do not have.
