First off, I used the search, I couldn't find anything pertaining to this.

Now that that's out of the way, I'd like to talk to you all about the drumming drummers that drum. Its an art that is all too often overlooked, and it currently ranks last in the list of people in a band girls will sleep with. As a fellow drum enthusiast, here is my question to all of you:

Who is your favorite drummer in terms of technical skill and/or talent? I'm not talking personality wise here, I'm talking drummers that are so good, they actually make their band's music better.

Please list what band said drummer is from and also provide a link which highlights said drummer skills. I'll start things off.

Tony Thaxton from Motion City Soundtrack

Specific Track
"Everything is All Right"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOoxclSjxhM

Honorable Mention
"Time Turned Fragile"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydOllPuXg44

I realize that at first, his breaks and stuff don't sound that unique, but there are parts in each of these songs that I absolutely love (any of the non-chorus verses for example).

Neil Peart of Rush. I would /thread, but Keith Moon, John Bonham, Mike Portnoi, and the dude from Amon Amarth whose name escapes me could put up good fights.

Honestly? I suggest looking at drummers in the Metal genre. In particular, Meshuggah [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5prrbihsb3g] and Dream Theatre [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kjx3USc5cSs].

Polyrhythms win.

Keith Moon hands down, Neil Peart is great but Moon invented that frenzied style.

Honestly, I can't get into metal drumming. Its always all about speed (just like everything else in metal. Yes, speed has it place just like every other style, but I would much rather listen to people who come up with original sounding beats.

...and don't even get me started on the double bass line, it seems like every metal song ever created [ever] has it, after hearing it for the thousandth time I wanted to kill the person that invented it.

To me, its much harder to come up with original stuff, than to play fast.

IMO...

Oh no you don't.
Neil and Mike are both good, for sure, but they just can't compete with Max Roach.

Awesome, glad to know I'm not the only one on the forum.

My favorite drummer as far as percussive skill and talent would have to be Carl Palmer, of Asia and Emerson Lake and Palmer.

Oh Sweet Holy Mother how I love the drum track in Heat of the Moment. Never has anything so simple been so appreciated by me.

Chris Adler of Lamb of God

Specific track = Pariah [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9Bi_g_w0wI&feature=related]

Some intricate double bass work with his odd stick patterns are enough for me to respect him, but he writes his parts for the song after everyone else so it sounds awesome.

I'm not a drummer, although it is something I've always wanted to do but never really had the chance, room or money...
I had a couple of favorites though.

Ben Johnson from Biffy Clyro [link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJYAELtiThU[/link]
Tony Hajjar from At The Drive-In [link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wR1MVdDmUA[/link]
and
Andrew Forsman from The Fall Of Troy [link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3qOa2K1-VY[/link]

I went to one of Rush's 'Snakes and Arrows' concerts a while back. Peart had a 5 minute drum solo and then, with pyrotechnics flaring, the drum set REVOLVED 360 degrees around him as he continued to play. Now can you say /thread?

David Silveria from Korn, he added so much to that band... Hopefully he'll rejoin soon.

He made me want to improve my technical talent, and because of Korn and David, I am a much better drummer now. (self taught albeit)
