What would happen if Tsarist Russia colonized space?

tagline: FTL meets XCOM

As rebellions at the outskirts threaten the empire's security, a grand fleet designed to restore order is lost thanks to malfunctioning jump-gate technology. In desperation, the player, a prisoner jailed for crimes against society, is given a ship and ordered to restore the empire's former glory.

Starting with a combination of FTL's spaceship management and X-Com's isometric strategy, The Mandate hopes to expand into something much larger. If successful, players can expect customized spaceships, procedurally-generated environments, and even co-op RPG gameplay that lets you take on the galaxy with friends.

Using procedurally-generated galaxies, The Mandate sends players across various star systems, each harboring factions, bases, and other unique encounters. Players take on the role of ship captain, guiding recruits and officers through spaceship combat, boarding missions, and even ship defense. Captains must be careful not to waste the lives of crew members unthinkingly, however. Like XCOM, you'll be provided with a limited number of recruits that can easily be wiped out in enemy attacks, or sucked into space through hull breaches. Thankfully, you don't have to play alone - up to six Steam players can work together across the entire campaign, or called in periodically via panicked distress calls.

Wondering what the escapist community thinks? I for one would live to see high action Space Sims make a comeback, especially one with a good premise :)

We had a news item about this not too long ago.

Consensus was that the idea itself is great, but with the goals those guys are aiming for, $500,000 seems on the low side to get the game done before money runs out.

I'd say the game is too ambitious with 3 gametypes in one and pretty gfx on top. I hope to be proven wrong though and if the game does ever go gold, I'll be happy to buy a copy for more than the kickstarter entry level and support their next kickstarter too. Until then I'm not getting my hopes up.

I'd like to think they have a secondary funding strategy and only need the half mil for that but without knowing you don't know. You know?

I'm an optimist/mug who loves spaaaaaaace though so I've pledged. The Mandate looks ace.

That scenario is not impossible, but then it would have been in everyone's interest, including the devs, to be upfront about having other sources of funding aswell.

Larian did something like this for their DD:OS Kickstarter. Like, look our game is already half-finished and we have the money, but we like some extra cash to add these features to the game. This actually worked for them too.
It even worked for "Lord British" who is already rich as creosote and where the 1 million dollar goal was like petty cash for him, for his MMO and any serious MMO project ever.

So I'm just going to assume that for the Mandate there is not another 500K already in the bank. If there were it would be foolish to keep it a secret.
