I just saw it today.

I find it an intellectually challenging film that is masterfully crafted - and that's really all I can say at this time, since a movie like this requires multiple viewings and heavy consideration.

Has anyone else seen it, if so, what were your thoughts?

I haven't seen it, but I really want to. I really dig Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and I think Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood) is one of the best directors working today. Judging by the reviews I've seen, he did another outstanding job, and I can't wait to see it myself.

Well shit.
I thought this was going to be about Doctor Who.

I haven't watched it, but after reading the synopsis it sounds quite interesting.
I may give it a go if I ever get a chance.

Oh god, that face.

Because I dunno what the OP is talking about (Failure to explain oneself in thread: CODE-307/J.), I'll just go on to say that I'll bet you money he isn't gone for good. Man's been so popular that he's been around LONG after his natural lifespan.

Both Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman give some of the best performances of their careers, it's staggering really. From most of what I've read, either people think P. T. Anderson is a genius who is innovating cinema, or he's a pretentious art house director who makes boring movies. Obviously, I'm of the former thinking, and The Master is probably his most complicated and ambiguous film next to Magnolia.

Let me know what you think when you see it, I seriously need to discuss it with people.

I'm ambivalent about PTA's movies. I like Boogie Nights, but I thought Magnolia was boring and pretentious. I kinda like Punch-Drunk Love. There Will be Blood I've watched only once, I thought it was maybe overlong and never once through it I felt I was really loving it, but I think I have to see it at least once more to reach a final judgment.

But I'm looking forward to see The Master, it should at least be interesting.

From your thoughts on his other films, I don't anticipate you liking The Master. Boogie Nights, Hard Eight, and Punch-Drunk Love are his most structured, traditional films. Magnolia pulled away from that a little bit, but there's still very distinct stories to follow, and There Will Be Blood was really different and complex as far as methods of storytelling go, but now looks almost simple compared to The Master. The Master is the closest thing to literature I've seen on film. He loves his symbolism and metaphors and all that stuff.

I saw a review and I'm trying to convince a private cinema to show it, but the man is reluctant... Maybe I can go and check out the off-Hollywood cinema in Haifa.

But I found There Will be Blood intriguing, it's just that I felt there was something more there and I wasn't seeing it. I don't like to read about movies I didn't see yet, so I put it in a pile "to see later" and also "to read about" but never got around to doing it.

Yeah, that makes sense. A lot of times I'll read Ebert's review of a movie after I'm done watching it to gain some more insight. Or check Rotten Tomatoes and see if anyone's written anything intelligent about it.

I love PTA movies. Magnolia was brilliant! I can't wait to see it, and I'm going to have to look around at some reviews. WOnder if we have some on this forum?
I'm hoping Moviebob covers it in this week's Escape to the Movies - if not - I could give it a whirl.

I would like to see it again before I do, as I said it's a very complicated movie.

Haha, thanks. You should see my tattoos.
