It's an entertaining movie with some well done action scenes. It also brings up the concept of reality but it's not the first movie to do this, some examples being Blade Runner and Total Recall.

It's a fun popcorn flick with the depth of a thimble. It's a deep movie for shallow people, basically, but it's pretty and has some nice kung fu.

And in the end, isn't that the greatest truth of all?

The Matrix is one of my favorite movies and the sequel has the best car chase that I've ever seen.

I was waiting for that one. The obligatory movie critic comment. :p

What do you recommend then. What is something interesting and thought provocative to watch?

It's a great movie. There are so many interesting and awesome action scenes that leave your jaw hanging because of how well they are done. I haven't seen a movie that comes even close to it's quality since 2005.

I really liked the second movie as well even though it felt a bit slow at times, and the third is alright, good music you need to here.

I absolutely love it, and love the sequels as well even with their rough edges. One of my favourite series of all time, if not maybe the favourite.

Beyond just the quality of the movie(s), I also still feel the first Matrix film had possibly the best marketing of any movie I can remember.

Go back and watch the matrix, and just pay attention to the cinematography - The positioning of the camera, how the different shots take place and how the audience gets taken on a literal roller coaster ride through the whole thing.

The cinematography and camerawork alone makes that movie fucking incredible.

I think it's still fantastic, despite it being so often imitated later on, and wonder why they never made any sequels ever. No sequels at all. Nuh-uh.

I feel extremely sorry for those that think the car chase in this series is remotely good compared to other movie car chases.

A really entertaining cyberpunk fairy tale.
I liked the visuals and both worlds.
Definitely one of the most quotable movies I've seen, a lot of memorable scenes and dialogues.
The hero is a bit stiff but it has an awesome villain (special props for introducing Hugo Weaving to the world, dude is awesome in everything he does).
The action scenes are good, especially the fights. I like the way the fights are edited, everything is visible, no annoying quick cuts or shaky cam. The camera angles are all planned out, a lot of shots look like paintings.
Can't deny the impact it had on popular culture in the early 2000's. So many people ripped it off, so many parodied it, so many people started to wear trench coats and sunglasses.

I also liked Reloaded.
The action scenes are awesome. I think that when the Wachowskis got 300 million $ to make the sequels, they just wrote all of their jerk off fantasies that they couldn't do in the first one because of the budget constraints.
They actually built a mile of highway for that car chase in the middle.
I like that every character has their own life philosophy and the conflicts in the movie are basically conflicts between their philosophies.
Still lots of memorable scenes and quotable moments.
Although not as good as the first one, it's still good and a great set up for the last movie.

Revolutions however wasn't that great.
The fight in Zion was ok but pretty forgettable. The entire movie was kind of forgettable, to be honest. The only real memorable scene was the Dragonball fight at the end and that pissed me off because of how it played out and especially how it ended.
The resolution was disappointing (the big twist that was hinted at in Reloaded - reality with Zion and the machines is just another level of the matrix - didn't happen).

Eh, most of the "depth" is merely correlations between Eastern religious concepts and a semi-cyberpunk Western aesthetic. In many ways it can be compared to Star Wars.

I really like it's aesthetic and how it's basically a "Greatest Hits" of action flicks.

It's alright. The sequels are utter shit though.

I really liked the premise, and as I saw the original more and more, the bad acting got to me more and more.

I agree with most of the people here and will restate my opinion of the first one is a great movie.
I don't know if it's "classic" material, but it really just works.

The following films were terrible.

It's a very enjoyable movie, and probably a notch smarter than typical action fare. I think that the hero is faced with a choice between edging around the ledge of a tall building and being captured by the bad guys and chooses the latter alone was quite the striking script choice, and of course the visual style would be borrowed by video games and cinema alike for another decade and more.

It's just a pity it's the first of a rather lackluster trilogy.

The Matrix is one of my favourite films, because of the philosophical aspects of its universe and the brilliantly choreographed action scenes. I don?t think it?s overrated, but then again, that?s probably because I like it, and the definition of ?overrated? has apparently changed to ?things I dislike that others like?. It?s not as ?original? as most people think, but it?s fun and does genuinely get you thinking a little bit, which is what?s important to enjoying a film.

And I love Hugo Weaving?s performance as Agent Smith. Plus, it had Trinity before she became Neo?s whiny clinger-on. I mean, the sequels are decent and still worth a watch, but they don?t have the same innovative spark as the first film (as well as the fact that I just didn?t care for any of the new characters in the sequels, because they were all bland and uninspiring fillers).

I understand. Keanu Reeves fit the role of Neo because it didn't require that much acting prowess in the first place; Neo was just a walking "The One" archetype of the isolated tech geek who'd gotten in over his head and finally learned "his true fate" in the final battle. But in the rest of his films, he's not that good. The good films he's in are good because of the films themselves, not him.

I initially though The matrix was a really fun film when I was 13 but after I got into conspiracy theories for a bit and I watched Zeitgeist;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guXirzknYYE

...I saw how epic The matrix and matrix reloaded were on so many levels.

Watching the first chapter of Zeitgeist about Jesus, the Ages, cycles etc some of the dialogue is genius.

I'm sure there is an analysis somewhere of the matrix as a metaphor of juda-christian beliefs so I won't go into it.

I have a book given to me as a gift that delves very deep into the way The Matrix Trilogy is all about Hinduism. I think it's called Decoding The Matrix. It's an interesting read. I don't personally think that the Wachowskis were thinking on that level; what they were doing was fusing concepts from all over the dang place, from Hinduism to Christianity to Western postmodern philosophy to cyberpunk to anime to Hong Kong action flicks.

And that's the really impressive thing about The Matrix. It's so ambitious in its design, its very fabric, and it weaves itself together so well. The plot is relatively straightforward "hero's journey" stuff, still fun to watch, but not exactly revolutionary (c wut i did ther?). But it's the core concepts and the themes and the motifs and the philosophy that is so perfectly put together into a cohesive film, threaded through the plot in just the right amounts in just the right places, without unbalancing the pacing or the action, and doing so in a way to make the film seem entirely seamless, with a consistent tone and an aesthetic all its own. It's a true triumph of filmmaking, is what it is.

It's one of my favorite movies ever, has been since I first saw it when I was 13, and always will be.

Even the sequels don't get the credit they deserve. People complain about the new characters being boring; I get that. People complain about the plot going kinda sideways; I guess it has its issues. But when people complain about them being a mere cash grab, that's where you lose me. Watch the second film again with real attention on the themes and their various permutations throughout the movie. It's all about choice, control, free will, and the man-machine interface. If you are attentive, these ideas show up all over the place, in so many different actions and conversations, it's amazing. Revolutions, I will admit, is very inferior to the other two, but it still was no cynical cash grab; its themes are still used effectively and interestingly, even if it does get oddly preachy, and somehow boring in the middle. And Reloaded is a great movie in itself. It doesn't stand next to the original, but it's great nonetheless.

Um...hmmm.

Cinematography that got ripped off by lots of later films.

Originally, the machines weren't going to use humans as batteries, they needed the processing power of human brains for their computers or something. But it was decided that people wouldn't understand that, so they made the movie...shall we say less intellectually challenging? And it shows.

The brothers who directed it are now brother and sister.

That's all that comes to mind.

Loved it and liked both of the sequels. The Merovingian is one of my favorite characters in all of moviedom. I'd totally watch a spin off chronicling the Merovingian's exploits in the previous Matrix (I'd guess based off what Persephone said in the sequels, The Merovingian was once "The One" and found a way to escape his fate.)

The concepts in the first movie are a hodgepodge of every belief system, not just Buddhism and Abrahamic religions which makes a lot of sense when you consider the universe it exists in. I'd wager the Matrix is at least 6000 years old and covers the entire scope of what we know as history. Considering what the architect said and I paraphrase "The first matrix was a paradise (the Garden of Eden) that they couldn't accept". The second matrix was also a failure which most likely was wiped during the Great Flood (Noah's Ark consisted of the original Zion council).

Yes I've read many an essay on these movies. The Matrix trilogy when you boil it down pretty much is the Quest For The Holy Grail.

I don't know if I'd call them dated, they still stand up compared to modern cinema. They looked just as nice then as any movie does today.

It's pretty good.
Kind of cheesy at times and definitely dated and the whole POWER OF LOVE pulled out of its arse at the end is complete bullshit but otherwise it's enjoyable.
