After finishing the book Popcorn by Ben Elton it got me thinking.. What do you think about the media? Do you enjoy its exploitations? Do you use the media/these exploitations to your advantage? Do you despise the media and its truth bending ways?

What do you think of the media, fellow Escapists?

I like the media's facts, I hate all their opinions getting in the way of those facts. I have the same issue with text books and teachers.

Over all, a force for good that is slowly being tainted by evil.

Unless it's Fox News, they're just plain evil.

The media always hypes everything up. It bugs me sometimes, unless it's being massively overly done by papers like The Sun or Daily Mail. Then it's just funny :)

Problem is the media basically consists of other peoples opinions.. Its hard to find a media that allows you to make up your own mind, without any persuasion through language etc.

I don't listen to the media. They twist facts at best and completely create new facts at worst. If I really need to know what is going on I will go read, watch etc. the same story from several different news sources to try and get the whole picture. Even then it doesn't really give you everything most of the time.

I've all but stopped watching any news program (say for very few instances like The News Hour on PBS). Most, if not, all of it is extremely one sided. CNN, MSNBC, and any broadcast network news is too far left and FOX is too far right with barely anyone sharing each sides of a particular arguement.

I just read USA Today and The Wall Street Journal. Sure they too can be one sided at times, but nowhere near bad the previously mentioned news castsers.

EDIT:

Thus why "The News" is practically worthless now.

In Portugal they can also either be too government sided or too opposition sided but never impartial, I think its against their ethics policy to be impartial.

Yeah, I don't ever watch the news. I don't know how bad it is in Australia, but I'm generally uninterested. Gaming news is the only thing I read, and most of the time that's pretty objective (although some sites have had a history with being 360 biased, but that's gone down these days).

Most of the time I ignore the media. They seem to over-dramatize some situations, and they seem to ignore things that could be more important to know in place of things they think take priority. I especially ignore small media like things on homepages that have news links, since most of the time it's just more of pop-culture than it is anything even close to actual news.

I like the media when it, you know... does it's job. Like the ABC or SBS in Australia. They will give you a fair coverage of REAL news without all the "emotive" jargon words commercial stations try and jam into their news trying to get all those Mothers Against up in arms. ABC and SBS have actual respectable, professional reporters and correspondents in some pretty intense places doing commendable work. Not like commercial stations who make little more than infotainment (I like that term) pandering to the lowest common denominator (Current Affair etc). So in summary, GO ABC AND SBS you magnificent bastards and commercial stations? Well you can go off somewhere with your clueless, vapid fans and talk about Tiger Woods for the next 2 decades and leave me alone.

You know why I never listen to the media?

Those fucking Republicans corrupted EVERYTHING.
Is that why the media is almost always leftwards leaning?

I'm fine with the media, as long as you're aware of the bias I see no need to get up in arms about an outlet leaning one way or the other, especially if you get your news from multiple sources.

I can't stand them. Any type of media. It's gotten to the point where I can't even trust the stories. It's either milking a story like Tiger Woods or spouting opinions and calling them facts. I hate all types of news.

My favoriate quote of all time and its so true:

Control the media, control the mind.
By Kane in C&C series.

It's good entertainment, but you do need to question what it says alot of the time.
