just a small thing I had to do for film class on what I movie I liked at the moment and why.
If I were trapped on a deserted island and had to pick one movie out of my huge list of "likes" I think I would have to go with The Messenger directed by Oran Moverman and stars Ben Foster and Woody Harrelson, although the movie flunked on release it has many awards from the Berlin and Deauville film festival. The Movie's plot revolves around wounded combat vet SSGT. Will Montgomery(Ben Foster) getting placed with the jaded alcoholic Cpt. Tony Stone (Woody Harrelson) on the army's Casualty Notification Division, whose job is to inform loved ones of the passing of a family member due to being killed in wartime, it is crucial that they are they first ones to tell the families of their loss before news stations find out. Tony Stone is a vet of the Division and it is his job to teach Ben foster the do's and dont's of the job only to create tension between the two of them because unlike Harrelson, Foster has been in combat and was wounded, and has seen his friends die and so becomes angered by the job that has been imposed on him which states a that they cannot become emotional or console the victims family.
I love this movie for many reasons, it portrays raw human emotion very well as the challenges that Fosters character encounters, whether it be a mother hysterical in denial, a pregnant young wife, devastated with grief, or a father, so furious with anger at his son?s death that he spits in their faces. as you watch the movie you may find yourself attached to both characters and then you can find out why I enjoyed this movie so.
