For those not in the know, a mockbuster [http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mockbuster] is a z-grade direct to DVD knockoff of a popular movie, often having a title close to that of the movie it's coat-tailing in the hope of netting sales from the gullible.

As my primary example, I give you: " Atlantic Rim. [http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Rim_(film)] "

I shit you not.

So what's the most flagrant (and fragrant) example you've ever seen - something that makes you say "Oh no they di'nt?!" ?

Clash of the Empires/Lord of the Elves/Age of the Hobbits. You know, the one that had to change its name at least once due to SRS LGL BSNS.

EDIT: Actually, I was just looking at another one called Titanic 2 and noticed links to a whole trove of crappy films on its IMDB page, one of which was War of the Worlds 2. I have since come to the conclusion that the gods have abandoned us.

I'm sure a lot of people started watching Battle of Los Angeles on Netflix before realizing it wasn't Battle: Los Angeles (especially since the "of" is much smaller than the other words).

I remember actually seeing the cover of that particular mockbuster featured in ads for Netflix around that time. They must have suckered a few people into getting subscriptions with that.

OTOH, though, anyone can legally make a movie about those two, there's no copyright restriction. Making a sequel to an existing movie is another matter though.

Alien vs Hunter was a classic, all of the movies by the asylum are hilariously stupid / stupidly hilarious, especially to watch with friends

Look no further, here's a list of a whopping 50 Mockbuster movies:

My favorite one had to be "Battle of Los Angeles", which was a pretty smart way to cash in on the big-budget "Battle: Los Angeles".

You'll find that many of these movies are made by a studio called (The) Asylum. They've been making them for quite a few years now and in alarmingly high quantities.

Just look at the number of films since 2006. There are 11 films in 2012 alone.

EDIT: Looks like OPs offending film is also asylum

My favorite is Pirates, the porn knock off of Pirates of the Caribbean. Not that I watched it, but one of the Blockbusters near me listed it next to the actual PotC movie when that came out on DVD, and me and my buddy almost rented it out of confusion, and then realized what it was and had a good laugh about it. We were confused because a lot of people referred to PoTC as Pirates, and so we were like, "oh for the DvD release they just went with Pirate, ok then...." lol

I never got over the news that such a thing as The Asylum existed. How the fuck these people keep going is beyond my comprehension. It's moviemaking of the most cynical kind and I can only imagine a consumer base of professional cynics.
