A couple days ago there was a thread on the front page questioning why metal was the most popular genre on these forums. I gave it a good skim, and it seemed like the prevailing opinion was that metal was popular among video gamers because it seems outside the mainstream, as well as the high energy content nicely complimenting a good session of alien murdering.

I, however, am not a fan of metal. I consider myself fairly open to most styles of music, and I have several thousand songs of very different styles. At the end of the day I have never found a genre that can affect me the way that folk music can. There is something so beautifully poetic about it, plus some of it is very enjoyable to play on guitar, even if there are no blindingly fast solos.

So then, in this thread we shall discuss folk music. Modern folk music actually, so lets give Dylan a break and take a look at some of the modern stuff.

I found this song fairly recently actually. Just a few days ago a friend of mine was playing it on guitar, and I was curious as to what it was. Nice easy guitar part with a subtle banjo going in the background. Highly recommended.

A personal favorite. Played in drop d on with capo on 6th, I've always liked Fleet Foxes for avoiding the typical "love song" style of lyrics. A song about brothers.

So, any other fans of the acoustic guitar here on the escapist? Lets see if we can share some good stuff.

Fleet foxes are great. I love White Winter Hymnal. Also it's all about the flight of the concords, a spoof folk bad from the new Zealand the songs are both funny and quite pleasant to listen to.

The only other folk I listen to is Dylan. Although Joan Baez(spelling?) is pretty good, I know neither are modern but they both amazing

Harry Chapin is an awesome Folk Rocker, though he's not really modern :(. But I agree folk has some of the most emotional music and lyrics you can find.

Fionn Regan.

He's sort of like a Dadaist Nick Drake.
Wouldn't really call it 'rock', though. His upcoming album seems to have a more energetic sound to it. We'll see.

Futurama reference for the win. I'm not a massive fan of folk music, although it is one of the only genres outside of rock and metal that I can stand without changing the song.
