Honestly, I've also been bored by the RTS genre for quite awhile now, back in the day, I enjoyed playing AOE2 with friends, but I'm no longer in the same situation (no longe rin college, namely), and after awhile, they became boring. I think WC3 was the most recent I bothered playing, and I never played it online at all, just the single player campaign.

I liked Red Alert 2 because it was fun and challenging and the matches went pretty quick. I know this is a bad thing in some people's eyes, but it's nice when you only have half an hour to sit down and play. You ran into a pretty decent range of skills online as well, from pro buttrapists to people who never figured out that they needed to build more than one power plant. :p

Nice hearing that im not alone when it comes to this =) I have never tried Total Annihiliation, maybe I'll give it a try someday =) Starcraft and warcraft 3 are games I have played alot, even though the time i spend on WC3 is mostly placed in DotA. ( All of my friends did'nt like wc3 for some reason, so I never really got into the real game, except for the campaign.) Cant wait for Starcraft 2, even though I have this slight feeling that its going to be a bit of a let down. Never tried Sacrifice either, never heard of it actually, so I'll make sure to check it out aswell. AO2 is a great game! Red Alert 2 is a game that I have, but never play. I gor it in the "The First Decade" box, maybe I'll give it a try soon ^^

The game I like the most, except for the ones mentioned above, is Dawn of War. The game is so great, even though it is having some rough times because of balancing issues. ( 7 races total I believe.) It was the first Squad based game I've ever played, and it sure was funny in multiplayer, smashing my buddy's base with my Baneblade of doom xD The kill animations for some of the units was also damn good, and sometimes just awsome. I mean, whats not great with a giant demon spearing a tiny soldier with his bigass sword, letting him glide down the blade, and then tossing him away... so funny xD And that force commander beating the crap out of him later... Those who have played the game know what im talking about :D

Anyways, keep the games comming ^^

dawn of war is going up to 11 races.. lol, the game just feels like... look we got 11 races, buy us, wich doesnt appeal to me. but i must admit i've had fun with it :)

anyhow, Total Annihilation is better then both warcraft and starcraft imo, it was extremely advanced for its time (though this is maybe exactly the reason why starcraft and warcraft did better) because yes, you can play it by just making lots of units, but the actuall strategies in that game are extremely deep because of the number units you can deploy and such.

And Sacrifice is probably one of the best and most original games i have EVER played, with a GREAT story too. It's RTS but its in 3rd person, your a wizard, you can summon creatures and cast spells, and you fight other wizards, this may sound very lame, but the game is made extremely well and it just looks amazing (Style wise) its hard to recognize ANY being in Sacrifice in comparison with the real world.

I like Dawn of War a lot too. I think it's better than Starcraft even. The intro sequence is also really awesome.

some fellow said, there's no such thing as a "real-time" strategy. that being said:

DUNE 2
C&C TIBERIAN SUN
BLITZKRIEG + mods (favorite)

Starcraft
Homeworld 1 & 2

These three games (four if you count Broodwar I suppose) have a surprisingly good storyline and are the only RTS games I've played as single player games. Guess that caught my interest and made me continue playing them as multiplayer games.

I played Dawn of War and Company of Heroes abit, but tired. I kind of like Relic because they do interesting things with their games, despite boring me, but I suppose if you have a particular interest in the genre they might be great.

World in Conflict has some good multiplayer when it works right. Although you can technically consider it a tactics game since there is no base building, it's all unit management.

The game is basically built on 8 vs 8 multiplayer games, where each person picks a role (Armor, Infantry, Support and Air) where you have to support one another to make any progress. Air destroys Armor players, Support destroys Air, and Armor destroys Support, with the Infantry being the jack of all trades, master of none role really. You take and hold points (like a Battlefield game almost), you have a very limited population cap. The built in VOIP and reliance on teamwork can make the game extremely fun when it works right, but sadly that isn't too often.

Lack of communication among players and really, really vicious team-stacking can make the multiplayer tough to enjoy unless you're playing with friends. The reliance on teamwork means that one or two bad players on a team can ruin it by not using their role to it's potential.

I still think it has a lot of potential though, there's a multiplayer demo out there that might be worth a look.

I've had the most enjoyment with AoE2 and Warcraft 2. Most of my family would sit downstairs playing AoE2 over our LAN, or watch each other play and argue over whether to train more archers or keep a cavalry force for killing siege weaponry.
