The question is simple, what was the most rewarding game you have ever played?
Mine would be Demon's Souls, that game is incredibly difficult, but unlike other games that are hard, it doesnt frustrate me, its actually completely fair, and every time i die, i know its my own fault, and that there is a way around it, not to mention, just the joy you get when you defeat a hard enemy, i was so overjoyed when i finally beat the red eyed knight, i almost cried.

So what about you escapists? What is/are the most rewarding game(s) youve ever played and why?

Difficult games are almost always the most rewarding for me. Three of the most rewarding games I've played are N, Super Meat Boy, and Dragon Age. Dragon Age was the most rewarding with my first character, who I built poorly, which made the game more difficult than it should have been.

Demon's Souls aswell.

It has an odd feel to it. Its like if the game tells you that you are worthless, but then you respond to it with "Oh yeah, well if im worthless, then how did i beat that HUGE ass knight".

It also is a very scary game (not conventionaly scary, rather "I dont want to die" sort of feel).

Deus Ex.
I started on highest difficulty and knew nothing in advance.

Of course now I know how to abuse the AI, and remembers passwords, door codes, secret locations etc.

I've though it over, and I am torn between Star Ocean 3, rewarding me for grinding and beating its pain-in-the-ass post game with sweet new attacks, or Muramasa. Once you start beating the late game bosses in hard mode, that is a reward in itself.

I really enjoyed Darwinia and Dear Esther. Darwinia because I felt as though I'd accomplished something by the end, I felt as though I really did save a digital world. And Dear Esther because it doesn't have a clear meaning you're forced to draw your own conclusion, you have to think.

I know, i felt like an incredible badass when I took down that Dickhead Tower Knight, then a blue eyed knight and an archer killed me, just goes to show that you can never get overconfident in that game

Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow over Mystara

It's a brawler/rpg in the video arcades, and the very first time I managed to finish the game on 1 credit was made of awesome.
Then all the arcades started getting rid of it.

'cos when 1 credit = 90+ minutes of gameplay, they don't make much money.

Kana: Little Sister. For reasons I can't explain without serious spoilers.

Elsewhere...probably God Hand. To put it simply, <url=http://gamovr.mx981.com/data/images/2008/03/ggodhand-original.jpg>this comic is spot-on accurate. Finally beating that game on Hard difficulty, in about the most jaw-droppingly appropriate manner possible (hint: if your Double Shaolin Blast meets Angra's Shockwave...yours wins), not to mention having beaten all 51 fighting ring challenges (including the last one, against <color=aliceblue>yourself, the Godhand) was incredibly satisfying.

Compared to that, playing Fate/Unlimited Codes and using Archer's Unlimited Blade Works ability is almost mundane. Almost, unless you're the type to say each individual line of the incantation out loud and appreciate the fact that completing it changes the BGM to "Emiya." Not to mention do the gestures while finishing with "So, as I pray...Unlimited Blade Works" So yeah.

...in fact, the original Fate/Stay Night was rewarding, as well.

While I do feel the need to give special mention to Portal, the most rewarding game I ever played was without a doubt Okami. By the end of that game I genuinely felt like I had not only saved the world (after all, that happens all the time in video games) but improved upon it in a good and benevolent way.

Mass Effect 2 on Insanity. The collector ship took me two days, and my celebration of victory struck fear into the hearts of all around.

Very impressive! I tip my hat to you.

OT: Scott Pilgrim vs the World: The Game. I took me forever to finish it, but boy howdy was it worth it.

Fallout 3.

After 400 hours it just keeps on giving ( I actually found somewhere I never found before yesterday, even after all that time)

Oblivion was really rewarding because it just kept on giving me stuff, like new gear, missions, etc.
And Super Meat Boy, because beating some of those really aggravating levels is very satisfying.
