You guys remember Movie Defense Force right? Well here is the thread where we can continue the legacy, with a twist. You can pick another movie that you want to completely savage. Also, keep in mind when defending the film of your choice, at least acknowledge why someone may not like the film in question. Right, with that in mind, let me get us rolling with something I want to get off my chest, Godzilla '14 vs '98. Now I don't want to turn this into an essay, so I'll just give the highlights.
G'14:
+ Monsters actually feel big, with humans regularly in the shots to give scale as everyone knows how big a human is, as well as framing the shots in ways only a human could perform (foot, car, helicopter, etc.)
+ Great pains were clearly made to make the monsters look right when in motion down to the smallest detail like Godzilla's chest inflating and deflating like a bellows. That's right, they actually animated Godzilla breathing
+ So many fantastic shots
+ The movie at least makes an effort to say something, weather or not it worked depends on the viewer
+ Godzilla fan service everywhere. The film makers wanted to let the fans know they cared
+ Characters are for the most part bland but at least they don't annoy me (we'll get to that later)
- That is still no excuse for bland characters
- This one is more towards the DVD but I once read a complaint by our own Marter that the final battle was too dark and dusty. While I don't remember that being an issue in theaters it sure as hell fucking is on DVD. Why couldn't they have just copied the HD download version and given the disk the same treatment 'cause the download version looks great
- The slow burn may bore some. I managed to pay rapt attention during it but I recognize that some might have issue with it
Overall: Godzilla '14 may not be the best general audience film, but is pretty inoffensive to both fans and said general audience, which is more than can be said of some reboots/remakes
G'98
- A wise man once said, "I would rather have boring characters, than ones that make me angry." That is the characters is Godzilla '98 in a nutshell, a movie populated entirely by comedy relief characters that only serve to irritate the viewer
- CG is fucking terrible, likely because so much of the effects is spent on it at a time when it wasn't ready for it outside of PIXAR where it wasn't trying to render anything realistic for long stretches at a time unlike this movie where CG close-ups only highlight how bad it looks
- Scale for Zilla does not exist, he moves too fast and is inconsistent with how big he is, some shots establishing him as being as tall as the skyscrapers around him yet is still small enough to not buckle the city foundations when he burrows under it
- Broderick's character has no reason to stick around after the monster stuff happens. Say what you will about Ford conveniently being wherever the monsters are, that was more to go on than Nick ever had
- Zilla itself doesn't feel like a threat often times turning turning up to very conspicuously do fuck-all of importance and then buggering off
- I once read in a youtube comment on the Movie Defense Force episode on this movie saying it would be fine if it were its own thing but the fact that it was called Godzilla meant that it should be judged as such and I agree, if Jurassic World didn't have dinosaurs it would still have to be held to task for being tied to Jurassic Park
+ Mind you Zilla's scenes are highlights by virtue of making something happen
Overall: This movie is the bare minimum for a popcorn flick, watched once and then forgotten about, however it is actually worse than that, if you do remember it, it falls apart entirely under any scrutiny
Remembering both of these movies was my inspiration for this thread as for some reason I suddenly started thinking about both movies and wanted to talk about what went through my head, while also giving you guys a venue to defend movies you like from critics you've seen.
