I'm talking about when you hear a song on the radio, on a CD, or on Pandora or something, and you think it's so-so or don't really like it, then you watch its bad-ass music video, or hear it used in a movie that you enjoyed, or in a well put-together advertisement, and your opinion of it drastically improves.
Conversely, this can also be when you like a piece of music a lot, then see it used in a music video/movie/advertisement, and then you don't like it anymore or feel offended that it was used in such a way.
Personally, I find myself experiencing the former quite often, and have never really been in the latter category. Still, I've heard several people completely roll-over on some of their favorite bands when their music winds up in another type of media. For example, I've never been a huge fan of Queens of the Stone Age, but I gained a new appreciation for their song "Millionaire" after seeing it in the Bad Company 2 ad (the same happened after I saw the music video for "Feel Good Hit of the Summer", a song which I thought was kind of inane and pointless at first), but there was at least one thread on The Escapist full of people raging about how that same advertisement ruined the song for them.
What side of this scenario do you usually find yourself on? Why do you think you're affected by the "Music Video Effect" the way you are?
