This is the new BBC drama, a fairly youthful and fun series of the famous characters. Are you watching it? And if you are, what do you think of it so far?

On the balance of things, I'm really enjoying it. The first episode was the weakest so far, there was nothing particularly wrong with it but big chunks of the story had to be dedicated to introducing all the characters and it left the episode feeling flat overall.

But the rest has only grown on me. It looks absolutely gorgeous with the woods and countryside of the Czech Republic really creating that historical vibe and some of the sets are stunning.

I love the actors playing the musketeers, in particular Athos really gives off that sombre but respected vibe. It's impressive how faithful the representations of the actual Musketeers are actually (and it's been hilarious at some of the reviewers authoratively looking down on it, who've clearly actually never read the source material themselves. In particular The Telegraph [http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/tv-and-radio-reviews/10580278/The-Musketeers-episode-1-BBC-One-review.html] chose to inform us that Alexander Dumas would be rolling in his grave at the idea of Musketeers drinking or having affairs. The Guardian [http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/jan/17/alexandre-dumas-swashbuckling-musketeers-half-story] had definitely read the source material and chose to criticise the show for not respecting the influence Dumas had over later historical writers?)

I actually like the slightly boy-bandish set-up too, because surely the four Musketeers were the original boy band? The moody one, the romantic one, the stern one and the young one.

I feel like the plots themselves have felt a little irrelevant though. They weren't bad but they feel unnecessary. I'd prefer the character development to be a bigger focus and an ongoing plot. Still we're young in the series and the episodes so far have all been focused on introducing the characters in depth. Now we're out of that I've got hopes for the rest of them.

If any of you hadn't read the books, how understandable has it been so far? And did any of the connections between the characters surprise you?

EDIT: The first spoiler was a photo, this one gives some information on an actor which might spoil a potential twist at the end of this season.
Peter Capaldi is probably going to be otherwise occupied when the series hits a second season. Any speculation on what they might do without the Cardinal? Are they going to kill him off, and if they do how can they replace someone like that?

My parents have been watching it so I've been loosely following it (although I haven't seen the newest one). I've actually been really surprised at how good it is, I was expecting more Robin Hood/Merlin style crap but it's much better than that. Admittedly I've never read any of the original stories, but I've been enjoying this.

Also:
How long does filming a series take? I hope there's a way he can fit it in, he's an excellent villain (and should definitely be rocking that beard for Dr Who)

Yeah I wathc it. And it is fun. I mean, the writers seem to have gotten only clip notes about teh orginal novels, because teh are only passing resembalnces and none of the stories are even tehre. Hell, MIlady isn't branded. Really the work of someone that just got the names and the settings and decided to do their own thing (aramis was a womanizer, but he dind't flirt with the queen of France). Which is fine. It is a fun adventure series. The characters are correct, the acting is good and it has nice disgns. I have fun watching it, although I would never say it is a great series.

I'm think Aramis did have something going on with the Queen of France, wikipedia suggests the Queen went as far as to pay for all his clothes and gear. it might not be explicit I guess

In some ways I am disappointed that they haven't done any of the major stories yet (except the beginning episode was sort of similar) but I guess if they want to have a really long series then it makes sense to go off and do your own thing. I'm hopeful that we're going to slowly see the original stories appear as the series goes on (particularly the picnic under siege =D)

Nsh, he was going with the queen's confidant la Duchesse de Chevreuse, and seeing that her husband was a peer of France, she would be wealthy enough to supply him. The Queen's lover was the Duke of Buckingham, with that whole affair about the diamonds.

Also, except for teh duel (which wasn't against Athos only, he challenged all three in the same afternoon) I see no resemblance in the Pilot to the novel. And again, that is fine. Just do your thing show, is is fun at it is, and trying to copy the novels would be only detrimental to the show in general, seeing no one is even similar to their litery coutnerparts (Porthos was a Baron, Aramis isn't a clergyman, d'Artagnan sleeps with Milady later and by much more underhanded means) I think it is better. Just have fun with the names and teh settings, as trying to follow what was written now would only feel to be paying lip service to fans of the novels.

I haven't seen it but through it's cultural impact in the UK and what I've gathered, it seems it's a cheap rip-off of Atlantis, itself a cheap rip-off of Merlin, cheap rip-off of Robin Hood, and I'm sure that's cheap rip-off of something else. (all BBC/ITV series)

I've been watching it, kind of. I've seen the first two episodes so far, and plan to watch the others as well when I get some time. I've enjoyed it so far, and the only other adaption of the three musketeers I have seen has been the other two films. But then again I usually enjoy BBC dramas, even if they have really cheesy moments that seem out of place

It's not quite a young focused as Merlin was and it's definitely not the cheaper version of the two =D

This is roughly the difference in production values and aesthetic

It's obviously in the tradition of Merlin and Robin Hood (which had their good moments) but it's aimed at more of a Sherlock demographic. The best way to describe it would be that it takes the Three Musketeers property and then adapts it's plot and structuring to a modern Spooks type of thing (the later slightly more action packed seasons).
