Hi there, Escapist community, how're you doing? Now, you probably won't have heard of this if you live outside of the UK, but last night was a pretty big day for British television: The National Television Awards, or NTAs. It's basically the biggest TV award ceremony we have, so obviously it attracted a lot of buzz. I noticed the Escapist didn't have a thread for it, and I wanted to know what people had to say about it - did you see it, what did you think, etc - so here I am.
The awards attracted a lot of controversy this year because of some of the winners, with many people claiming the awards were fixed, so that's definitely something to ponder (though I don't personally think they were fixed). Just so everyone knows, here's a list of the winners.
Best Talent Show: The X Factor
Best Soap Opera: EastEnders
Best Comedy: Benidorm
Best Newcomer: Ricky Norwood
Best Entertainment Presenter: Ant and Dec
Best Factual Program: Top Gear
Digital Choice: The Inbetweeners
Best Entertainment Program: I'm a Celebrity
Serial Drama Performer: Lacey Turner
Topical Magazine Program: This Morning
Drama Performance: David Jason
Best Drama: Waterloo Road
Special Recognition: Bruce 'Brucie' Forsyth
I personally am very disapointed that Doctor Who and Sherlock - two of 2010s best dramas - did not recieve any recognition in the awards. Both shows were nominated for Best Drama, whilst the lead actors of DW and Sherlock were nominated for Drama Performer. However, both shows were beaten in both categories, something which shocked me as Doctor Who is one of the most popular shows in Britain. And I'm sorry, but I just don't see how Waterloo Road was the best drama of 2010!
Anyway, there it is. Discuss!
