Hi there, Escapist community, how're you doing? Now, you probably won't have heard of this if you live outside of the UK, but last night was a pretty big day for British television: The National Television Awards, or NTAs. It's basically the biggest TV award ceremony we have, so obviously it attracted a lot of buzz. I noticed the Escapist didn't have a thread for it, and I wanted to know what people had to say about it - did you see it, what did you think, etc - so here I am.

The awards attracted a lot of controversy this year because of some of the winners, with many people claiming the awards were fixed, so that's definitely something to ponder (though I don't personally think they were fixed). Just so everyone knows, here's a list of the winners.

Best Talent Show: The X Factor
Best Soap Opera: EastEnders
Best Comedy: Benidorm
Best Newcomer: Ricky Norwood
Best Entertainment Presenter: Ant and Dec
Best Factual Program: Top Gear
Digital Choice: The Inbetweeners
Best Entertainment Program: I'm a Celebrity
Serial Drama Performer: Lacey Turner
Topical Magazine Program: This Morning
Drama Performance: David Jason
Best Drama: Waterloo Road
Special Recognition: Bruce 'Brucie' Forsyth

I personally am very disapointed that Doctor Who and Sherlock - two of 2010s best dramas - did not recieve any recognition in the awards. Both shows were nominated for Best Drama, whilst the lead actors of DW and Sherlock were nominated for Drama Performer. However, both shows were beaten in both categories, something which shocked me as Doctor Who is one of the most popular shows in Britain. And I'm sorry, but I just don't see how Waterloo Road was the best drama of 2010!

Anyway, there it is. Discuss!

I'm from Windsor and didn't even realise they happened haha, awards ceremonies pass me by.

Really doubt they were fixed.
Xfactor made the most money.
East Enders makes the most money.
Benidorm? ...no. Just no. Peep Show should've won. Benidorm probably made more money.
Ricky Norwood? Don't know who he is. Probably makes a load of money.
Ant & Dec? Yeah, fine by me. Legends.
Top Gear(Y).
Inbetweeners? Meh, never bothered to watch it.
IACGMOOH...meh.
...Lacy whonow?
Something For The Weekend is far better than This Morning. This Morning probably made more money.
David Jason. Legend.
...*no opinion whatsoever*
YEAAAH BRUCIIIIEEEE!

It's ITV... what did you expect? Quality? Accuracy? Honesty? Come on... ;)

I'm not sure who Ricky Norwood is, but I assume he's that wailing lump of XFactor nonsense who poisoned the charts at christmas with .......... ah. What's the song again. I think it was by Kings of Leon or something. I've blocked it out so much I can't even remember the title. Whichever it was, it was miles better originally, and I didn't even like it much then.

So my mum switched over to it, that guy what I just described was up on a massive podium, trying to strum his guitar in time to the backing track and howling into the mic, tearing the song a new one in the worst possible way. I made my apologies (having already been ripping into the camerawork on Michel Frenchguy's "Service") and GotTFO.

EDIT: Googled it. Ricky is some guy in Eastenders (funny that they'd take on someone called that huh). I'm thinking of Matt Cardle with "When We Collide" originally by Biffy Clyro, one of our few current vaguely creative rock bands. Sadly beating them for the number 1 spot. I have no real love for the band (more a Maximo Park kinda guy), and they'll have made a reasonable wage off the royalties, but their work surely deserves better treatment than that...
Now I'm going to go scrub out my brain.

Hmmm :| Why must they change the title?

possibly Biffy secretly didn't want to be affiliated with the song but wanted the money, who knows?

I agree with Benidorm, who watches that crap other than seventy year olds, who would laugh to "how did the chicken cross the road" jokes.

Also the Inbetweeners is the most overrated piece of shit to ever grace British comedy, watching one episode was enough for me.
