The negative stereotype is created by nerds themselves.
Girls are not turned away by nerds, they are turned away by socially awkward numb-wits who has no clue what they are doing.

I'm quite 'nerdy', huge fan of StarWars, the Alien franchise and Zombie and Sci-fi flicks in general. Spend more time than I probably should playing PS3 and yet I have had no problems with girls.

It's not the hobby that the problem, it's the person.

It's awesome being a nerd, because you get to have a ton of hobbies. Like wargaming, tabletop RPG's, weird science fiction, videogames, all that stuff. I love that stuff.

It seems to be getting more trendy for people (mostly girls) to claim to be a nerd or nerdish when they play games as they appeal to the opposite sex more as they are more easily relatable.

This is the way i figure it anyway.

Personally im still abit of a closet nerd although this has more or less gone out the window since i have my own place and have a bookshelf in my living room filled with manga stupid amounts of games, MTG cards and various game related action figures.

I'm not fussed about being called a nerd although most people refer to me as "Stoner #myname#" for obvious reasons hehe.

You say that yet there is still a social stigma attatched to nerds and some women won't go near you with a barge pole for fear of being dropped into this bracket.

You do realize that 'nerd' is not a physical condition that can be seen?
Of course girls will walk away if you only talk about whatever nerdy hobby you have.

The problem is not the hobby, it's the person. Sorry to say it. The social stigma is not caused by the hobby but by the socially inept.

It's not like you can not talk about or enjoy your hobby when out with your friends.
Here is a small anecdote to prove the point:
Just last night some mates and I went to a bar to watch the EURO2012 games and get some beers. The happened to have an arcade machine so naturally we started challenging each other in Street Fighter II, and we were ecstatic.

At the bar there were also a group of very pretty girls present. When the bar closed at 2300, and we were getting our jackets, one of them as they walked past us stopped briefly, grabbed my arm and suggested we joined them at a bar downtown. She then let go and went with her friends.

Girls don't care what your hobby is, they care if you are a person or a dull husk.

THANK YOU FOR THIS POST!! I feel better SOMEBODY out there is feeling this annoyance! Everybody and their mother's brother is proclaiming to be a nerd and it's annoying the Shit out of me!... i can't take one more person bragging about being a nerd. I am one, and proud yes. But jeez, i believe being a nerd also comes with some subtlety about it... A real nerd does not brag about being one. He or she just IS one.. I'm so frustrated with all of this, pandemic as you say.. And yessss. it has to be earned!! You can't get that title just cuz you want it.. The nerd in oneself shines from within..

I read in a recent magazine article in japan that nerds are cooler than they used to be before because it means that you have a passion, and you have a belief and you also have the ability to search information and remember it. This seems to be especially important since with the internet, we are exposed to so much information and it is necessary to be able to digest and choose which one is important and which one is not.

Also, they said that nerds tend to know what they want and do not mind spending money for things that are of value to them, but save up in a proper way to do so.

I agree to most of the stuff they pointed out.
