Looking up, Wes frowned at the face in front of him for a second. He still wasn't quite past the burns, but knew he shouldn't dwell on it. "Uh, yeah." he said, trying to be civil. "Why?"

Maddox sat next to Wes, eating his food. He was surprised that the mutant in the kitchen was able to bring forth this array of food, but he didn't want to ask questions about it. For some things, ignorance is bliss.

Jacob, the mutant that his new allies had been sent to save, approached the table, and asked if they liked muffins.

"It depends on the type of muffin." Maddox answered honestly. "But if you're talking about muffins in general, then yes. I like muffins."

Malcolm stirred slightly. A few seconds later consciousness returned, and he opened his eyes. Seeing him awake, the camp's medic hurried over and looked down at him.

"Do you need assistance, or are you capable of regeneration?" the medic asked.

It took Malcolm some effort to speak, but he said, "Bring me a living plant. I can... I can transfer its life-force to me to... to heal."

"Of course," the medic replied, turning to two other mutants. "You, get what the patient wants, and you, report to Casa. He'll want to know that one of his team members is recovering." Both mutants hurried out of the infirmary.

Jacob glares at Maddox and says "Well I didnt stick an energy blade in your shoulder so you dont get this muffin.", he then slides the muffin across to Wes and says "An apology, I guess stopping you from bleeding out does hurt.".

"I don't get the muffin? Excuse me while I go cry." Maddox said sarcastically to Jacob. "Still, I'm not complaining. I sure wouldn't want to be energy-fingered in the shoulder."

"You definitely don't." Wes said to Maddox. He took the muffin and looked back to Jacob. He was sure of the sadist enjoyment Jacob had taken in helping him, but now he could see some remorse. He seemed different that he had been at the complex. "Thanks. For this, and for helping me."

"So, now that everyone's sitting down, let's talk." Maddox said cheerfully. "What do you guys want to talk about?

Maddox drummed his fingers on the table.

"Oh! I know... How did you guys discover that you were mutants?" Maddox asked.

Jacob put his head lazily on his fist and replied "Parents kept mutants hidden in the house, they were found and murdered, I was sent off to an orphanage that raised children who were suspected of being mutants and were watched until we matured... many of us had shown signs of mutation and were burnt, luckily my skills didnt involve some wimpy little power and I killed a lot of people to get myself and my brothers and sisters out of there... I was 11 at the time." he pauses to take a drink and then sarcastically continues "Its been smooth sailing since then.".

The medic's assistant returned, carrying a handful of dirt with a few flowers in it. He handed the dirt to Malcolm, who closed his eyes and concentrated on the plants. He murmured, "Heal." The flowers began to wilt slightly, and as they did so, the cuts and bruises on Malcolm's face diminished and faded to nothing. Malcolm opened his eyes and released his mental hold on the flowers.

"Whoa, that's the stuff," Malcolm said, getting up. He turned to the medic, nodded his thanks and walked out.

A few minutes later he replanted the flowers and headed for the dining hall.

"Wow... That's rough." Maddox commented on Jacob's statement. "My powers showed when I was twelve. I was bullied pretty badly when I was a kid, and I got beat up a fair bit. One day, when I cornered by this older boy, I had to defend myself and started to choke him. When the teacher's intervened and pulled us apart, there was a hand-shaped burn on his throat. I was immediately sent home, and my parents called the police. I was taken away to a huge mutant reformation facility, and I was stuck there for about seven years. I escaped two years and two months ago, and I was glad to finally be free."

Conner sat nearby quietly, enjoying his meal. Interested by the stories they told, he knew his wasn't as exciting. Or maybe it was, and his perspective just didn't make it seem like it was. Regardless, he kept silent and just listened, like he was used to doing.

Wes debated how much of his own story to tell. "I was in a foster home before my abilities showed up. Two years ago, an anti-mutant group at school decided that I might be a threat," he paused and decided not to mention that his foster parents had made sure gossip of his mutant mother spread far and wide, "even though I had no powers yet. I took a punch and dissolved, then reformed a second later.

"As it turns out, they were right." he continued, a bitter edge to his voice, "I couldn't figure out how I had done it, and they beat the shit out of me anyways. One of Magneto's scouts scraped me up after they left.

"I think it was for the best." He finished, taking a bite from Jak's muffin.

Jacob looked up at Wes and said "You really need to learn how to fight... its easier to learn how to fight people on their own terms before mastering your abilities, that way you wont die before you do master your gift.", he then looked over to Malcolm and replied "Our pasts... and muffins.".

"There's not much to tell, really," Malcolm said. "Basically, I learned I could control plants a few days after I turned 17. My dad was heaps anti-mutant, bordering on, like, completely shunning their existence. I tried to hide my power from him, but eventually he caught me a few months later talking to the grape vine. Kicked me out of the house and left me to fend for myself. I had to break in to get all my stuff I would need before I left."

"From there I lived on the streets for a couple of months. I still went to school, though; I paid my fees by helping out with the Bio classes. I also visited a winery and learned what they use to make their products. I tried my hand at it, and the '06 bottles turned out pretty good. There's a few different vintages up in my treehouse."

"I also learned how to fight with my abilities," Malcolm continued. "Plants will do pretty much anything I tell them to, so I can trip people up, trap them in trees or strangle them with vines. I picked the name Huntsman on my eighteenth birthday, a few months after I was kicked out. It was better than something like "Nature-lover". On the subject... I think I'll change what Magneto calls my "real name" to Dionysus. God of wine, fruit-bearing plants, etcetera." He paused. "Wow. I've said a lot more than I thought I would. To sum up, just after I turned eighteen, the boss's scouts found me and brought me in."

"Well, you're all lucky that you managed to hide for so long. I'd hate to have seen you guys in that facility amongst all of those indoctrinated sheep who dare to call themselves mutant." Maddox clenched his fist when he remembered. The air around him grew slightly colder, and he pounded his fist against the table, denting it noticeably. "I'm sorry... I shouldn't have mentioned it..."

"It's not a problem, really," Malcolm assured him. "I know damn well I wouldn't last very long in a reform camp. I mean, sure, I'm strong in will, but I'm weak as a blade of grass. They'd probably find me kicked to death in a pit."

Approaching the site, prepare Xi for drop... the pilot shouts over the engines as the chopper slows to silent running a few hundred feet out from the base.

Xi's restraints are broken as the chopper begins to hover over the mutant base.

Door opening...opened the loadmaster says over the light buzz from the engines, 3...2...1...go! he shouts and pushes Xi out the door.

He begins free falling towards the earth, landing with a crash in the central clearing of the camp.

Mutants... he growls as faces begin appearing at the flaps in their tents, the blades slip through the cuts in his arms.

Some of the younger mutants scream as he dashes towards them, their lives cut short a few seconds later.

The screams ring through the mess hall where the group is seated.
