The New Genre - The GSFPS

The GSFPS. Or the "Generic Space First Person Shooter." I want something new, and something innovative out of developers. I hate replaying the same game with a different name every time. And I know everyone else rants about it, but I see no good releases coming out this year, except for God Of War III.

Do you think developers are just resorting to the GSFPS to make money? Do you see any hope in the future of the gaming industry?

It's not new genres we should work on it's new original games for the genres we should work on

Devs are more likely to make something generic in contrast to something that is original because of the fear of trying new things that gamers have. Basically if it makes money they don't care for the most part

This has already been discussed to death.

Yes FPS games are generic. But you know what? Most things these days are. Many genres, such as RPGs, have also become generic. Also how many movies come out these days that aren't just a rehash of an older movie? How many new and interesting TV shows do we see?

Part of this has to do with a lack of creativity and unwillingness to try new ideas on the developers part, but it is also a problem that stems from the consumers. Many ideas have already been done so many games will be generic these days.

Also a considerable amount of work has to be put into video games these days just to make them function. Our constant demand for high quality graphics forces developers to sink a ton of money into each game. When trying a new and innovative concept it could either be a huge success or a complete failure. It costs so much to produce the game that having the game fail horribly causes a huge loss, so developers choose to stick with whats proven to at least generate some profit, even if it is generic.

Play old FPS games.

People who started playing games in 2008 judge the genre and they've never heard of Deus Ex. ;/

Anyway, yes, new FPS games are terribly uninspired aside from the rare gem such as Bioshock and (FPA, I know) Metroid Prime (MP 3 came out somewhat recently, though it's an old idea which was unique back then and is still unique now since no one else really does it).

Well, there are some good looking original IPs, like Alpha Protocol, inFamous, and Prototype.

I'm springing for Alpha Protocol myself.

I was going thru my rom collection the other night, to see what I should add to my hard-drive next to Super Mario, Mega-Man 2, and Contra.

You know what I found? Bonk, Big-nose, Journey to Silius, Superblade, and a million other rip-offs.

Halo made big sacks of money, now everyone else wants a piece of it. Welcome to the final stage, called 'Decline'.

They need to make an FPS Platformer... like Prince of Persia or God of War, but first person... Think "Megaman FPS"... that would rock!

I started back in the day, so I know of what you speak.

First person shooters are good, but in moderation.

I would not say they resort to it, but for a developer in this economic situation, a solid genera that will sell is like candy to a baby. I see an end to it, but it has to come from the consumer, not the developer. and im sure there is hope for the game industry. new blood makes new games, new games make new ideas, and new ideas make new genres.

Not saying you didn't, but saying that many people who criticize the genre haven't even played the hybrid-genre games or shining stars of the genre. They just see LOL HALO and LOL CoD.

Well, they tried... Mirror's Edge looks about as close to a 'Prince of Persia' format as you could possibly get without leaving behind guns and urban settings. And you know that if they made a Megaman FPS it would just be a dirt-stale rip-off of Half-Life 1, dressed up as Halo.

Speaking of which, the same thing happened when Counter-Strike hit big, except CS didn't make sacks of cash when it came out so all of the 'REALISTIC COMBAT SIMULATOR' FPS games seemed fairly original when they came out. Now, I want to know, who is going to make the great (and the god-awful) rip-offs of TF2? Hm? WHERE ARE THEY??? And Portal! No-one will even TRY to touch it! These are the kind of games I DO want to see throngs of!!!!!

(Portal + Megaman could make for some FUCKING AWESOME SHIT, btw - developers, are you taking notes??? EDIT: please don't fuck up the music! make it awesome, like MM2)

Thank god people are waking up and starting to realize how FUN these games were!
