So, what happend to the news? I mean, i'm a night owl, I stay up until around five AM. I watch the news, why the hell is celebrity drama and cute animal stories taking up time that could be covering actual stories. If I wanted to watch celebrity drama i'd watch TMZ, which i'd never do. If I wanted cute animals i'd go to lolcats, which I have to shamefully admit I do on occasion.

So, I ask you all, did the dumb viewers cause the news to stoop to the peoples level, or did the media cause our brains to rot?

The news airs what it does because people watch it. People watch it because they want to keep up to speed with the news. This unfortunatley leads to a cycle where the news that is popular is aired over the news that is relevant, and people accept it because it's the news. The best solution is to get your information online, and in such a way you are able to find the stories that interest you with out all that pesky "more at eleven" noise.

You gotta read it online. Network news channels are simply entertainment nowadays.

I wonder.. Does the US have any neutral news channel (or network) on public TV, which airs unbiased, serious, and interesting news items at any day of the time? And with neutral, I mean that they don't give their own opinion on the happenings (besides perhaps saying that it's sad an x amount of people died there), that they don't too obviously favour one side over the other, that there's no sensationalism involved, etc. You have a big enough country, it shouldn't be too hard to find any news, right?

And the media is in essence the Fourth Branch of the Government, I guess. The government wants people to be idiots, so the public doesn't question too much of what is going on. So it's all a big conspiracy by the government, to air frivolous information, so you don't know what's going on. Internet and free unbiased information for the win!

Here in Australia I'd say Channel 10 is the best for getting real news, they seem to be the least biased (Channels 7&9 are so right wing its not funny) but its still pretty bad in the crap they actually consider "News"

Welcome to the last 30 years of broadcasting the news. If you want informative news and opinion, IMO you'll have to shell out the 30pence and buy a newspaper. Even then the news may well be incredibly biased. Try www.reuters.co.uk if you really want to.
