(I saw a thread just last night about a lack of gaming discussion here at the Escapist and I couldn't help but agree with him just a little bit. So, I decided I would rectify this by starting a discussion. Let's take this somewhere, shall we? Ready?)
I'm posing a hypothetical to you. You are an employee of Sony or Microsoft. It's coming time to get to the drawing board on the next console. Your task is to come up with reasonable ideas for said console. Consider, but don't limit yourself to, these questions:
1. Are you going to make a graphics powerhouse machine or are you going to go cheaper?
2. What kind of media features do you think are necessary?
3. What kind of gimmick will you use, if any?
4. Will you stick with your current motion control scheme or will you create a new one?
5. What new features will you include?
6. How will your market the new console?
7. What will you call the new device?
8. How will you attract game developers and publishers to make games for your console?
In other words, I'm asking to design a console for either company and then pitch it to me. The purpose of this is to put some real thought into the philosophy of console design and hopefully come to think reasonably about what to expect in the next generation.
Note: I'm not including Nintendo in this because we already have reasonable expectation of the WiiU, but know little to nothing about the next Xbox or Playstation.
Note 2: I'm not making rules for this thread, per se. You don't have to answer the questions, they're just there as a guide to help you think. Also, you can choose either company or you can do both. Have fun!
