It seems that the direction R* pushed GTAIV in was not as wholly popular one. While there are those who enjoyed it there seems, to me anyway, a lot more who got bored of the gameplay and frustrated with any number of other things.

My idea for discussion is...Do you think R* will continue to push the new style through into other console games, (it wasn't exactly a critical flop)? Do you think they will listen to the fans and bring back some of the mini games and expand on the kind of playground they gave us with GTA:SA?
Or should they push in a whole new direction and give us something totally new?

For me it was the boredom and the realisation we'd done it all in previous games that put me off. Removing a lot of the rampage style minigames just seemed to contradict the freedom you were supposedly given. What's there to do if all there is is story missions?

Old style was better, San Andreas was so fun having so much little things. Little things change much and seen in GTA 4 where all the little things were missing. Too realistic is boredom in da butt if they could mix their new view and old SA stuff maybe a even better game would come out.

Um, story missions? That is something to do. In a lot of games, it's all there is.

I'll admit, I very rarely have even tried to do story missions in GTA, but I found that some parts of GTA IV worked well, and maybe it will be that R* listens and only keeps what is needed.

I loved it more then the prior GTA games. While SA is still amazing, I did like the turn the GTA franchise took in that it became a more realistic one. The gunplay in it was a real turn on for me, and, while it took time to get right, the cars were more enjoyable to drive. I hope they keep the franchise going the way it is headed.

I'm a sucker for crime-dramas so I for one enjoyed the new direction R* pushed the GTA franchise into with it's last console installment. The one thing that I do find common ground with other people on is that there really wasn't much to do after the main story besides multiplayer so content was lacking.

I feel that Rockstar should continue with the direction that the GTA franchise has been pushed into with GTA4, but add activities that go with the theme of the game's story. If GTA4 had side-missions that had to deal with working with Mafia bosses such as assassinating a judge to postpone a court hearing, it would add more to the experience and maybe fill in some optional backstory about the condition Liberty City is currently in, and not sacrifice the overall serious tone of the game.

Whew, that's the most I've written on this site yet, so forgive me if I somehow avoided your question or got a little off-topic, I tend to do that. :(

A game about pointless anarchy suddenly became very story heavy. Before, your boss would randomly order a tank, and you get him a fucking tank. Now you have to cart your cousin around while he prattles on about beeeg american teetees.
And you don't get a tank at all!
Don't get me wrong, GTA4 was a great game, but it wasn't GTA if you know what I mean.
R* needs to go back to the old style, where fun was more important than story. If they want to make a crime-drama on the side, fine, but bring back the anarchy.

PS: London's calling. C'mon! We need more mockney accents.

I appreciated the way GTAIV went over its predecessors. It felt more real, and truly like the highbrow series it is. I hope they stick with the new direction, but fix the gunplay a little more

I think they should push in whatever direction they feel is right for the series.

You really need to do this:

Find someone who doesn't know what GTA is (but has a vague liking for violence and action movies)
Plop them down in one of the GTA games, and see what they do that they find the most fun.

Focus on that from there. It could be just driving around, could be blowing stuff up, etc. Those games really do well with minimal structure; just enough to get people with no imagination to find something they like.

Absolutely. But for a GTA it felt lacking. I'd rather rampage and race than go on more dull ass dates or drinks with other characters.
I thought the game handled brilliantly, it just didn't hold my interest as a GTA.

I think they are trying to separate each of their GTA franchises a bit instead of just cloning the previous game just making it bigger..

Liberty City is going for a bit more gritty slightly realistic feel
Vice City is 80s and comical
San Andreas is gang warfare and huge city..

Theres nothing wrong with GTA4 at all.. just people are idiots sometimes.. they want changes/evolution to games yet when they do they complain and want it back as they wanted. I personally wouldnt of liked another clone of the old formula the story elements and mission variety were a good step forward.

They probably do another of the spin off games in the future but I think they want to do a few other things as well.

The realism may have not been popular among some people, but it still got a tonne of sales, and those numerous big fat 10/10 scores are going to be what Rockstar look at for deciding what the next game will be like.

I couldn't handle the driving sections. I am in the middle of chapter four and even after weeks of training I can't continue. It's simply because the three missions available deal with chasing someone or getting away from the police.

And they should put in a real story. GTA4 felt very glued together.
