The Next TF2 Update Isn't (Just) From Valve

Hot on the heels of the TF2 Engineer update comes a new slew of items - only these babies weren't designed by Valve.

Valve is good at many, many things - but if you had to pick one single thing that the PC developer was best at, it would probably be "taking good ideas from its community." Counter-Strike became a game in its own right, Portal was originally developed by students, and many of the maps and items currently in Team Fortress 2 were designed by the players [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97470-Valve-Adding-User-Made-Items-to-Team-Fortress-2].

Well, with the long-awaited Polycount [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101872-TF2-Update-The-Engineer-With-the-Golden-Wrench]. Artists were encouraged to come up with a "set" of items for one of the game's nine character classes, and five winners would have their sets added to the game.

As to be expected, the winning entries were all pretty impressive [http://www.polycount.com/2010/07/15/the-team-fortress-2-polycount-pack-winners]. The Soldier gets a heavy-duty "Tank Buster" rocket launcher and radio pack (exactly what use the radio will have remains to be seen). The speedy little Scout gets a 50's-milkman-themed outfit with the "Short Stop," a pistol that fires four rounds at once. While the Pyro's "Gas Station Attendant" set seems mostly cosmetic - as does the Spy's "Saharan Spy" Egyptian film noir getup - the Sniper seems to be getting a tranquilizer gun called the "Sydney Sleeper."

All in all, there's some very nifty stuff coming from Polycount and Valve. Even the unassuming Pyro and Spy packs won't just be cosmetic: In a post on the TF2 blog [http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=4076&p=1], it was announced that the team would be working to "attach gameplay attributes (probably of a game destroying nature) to these items." So feel free to wildly speculate about what they'll all do for now.

In the meantime, I'm going to be alternating between drooling over that gorgeous new Spy knife and trying to unlock that damned Wrangler on the Engineer.

You go offline for a couple of weeks, and suddenly the engineer update is out... And now another batch of items already?

I'd actually like it better if they left the game alone for a little while...

I did like the Pyro and the Sniper ones. But I am starting to feel that TF2 is getting too complicated for newcomers with all these updates.

Sorry to kill your dreams, but the whaler didn't win.
I for one, can't wait to beat someone with a mackerel as scout.

I NEED to get this on PC, I love all the updates the PC version gets. But I need a less crappy computer first.

Wait, so the Sniper doesn't get the Didgerie die?
I am disappoint.
Also, the Heavy should have gotten the Maracas. Seriously.

Some of this stuff is pretty funny, but I don't think it should be in the game, especially the cosmetic/costume changes. I'm with Yahtzee on the whole character design issue: keep it simple but distinctive, so players can tell who/what the enemy is with a quick glance.

I agree, I mean, I can understand all the classes having an update and all that, but, with all the hats and other Community features, it feels a bit much to be honest.....

Jesus, Im complaining about a company suporting a game that I love TOO MUCH! what is the world coming to!

2 things:

A) Just craft the Wrangler John, it's not that hard once you get the hang of it
B) The Spy's getting a fez. Need I say more?

Don't see how this applies here. All of the classes are still easily identifiable, regardless of what weapon they are using or hat they are wearing. It's not like a Spy running around with a fez is suddenly going to confuse people. One of Valve's design priorities is to make sure that a player can learn what they need to know about an opponent based on their visual appearance. Since most of the weapons in this pack are visually distinct, I don't see how there's any chance for confusion.

On-topic: While I definitely think these are some well designed items, I still can't help but feel a bit disappointed that the Medic didn't get anything. He was the first class to be updated, yet he hasn't gotten a single unlock since then. Plus I only alternate between the medigun and kritzkrieg, so to me it's like he only has 4 items. A new item pack could have breathed new life into the class.

Wow, the Sniper pack sure does seem to have a lot of "stuff".

StuffStuffStuffStuffStuff, to be precise.

Does anyone else think the fez looks... kinda dumb on the spy? Maybe that's part of the point though... but the fez on top of that mask made me snicker a bit. Ah well.
I wish I'd kept up with more of these updates, I haven't unlocked ANYTHING yet. Nevertheless, this is still exciting, everything that has gone into this game has been amazing and I'm usually happy just reading about it!

That's it, I'm getting more RAM so I can actually fucking play this game.

Luckily valve said they were going to add in all the good entries at later dates (And also said about half of all the entries were good) so you may get the things you want :)
