Our current trend seems to be "realistic" shooters and adding RPG elements into games (and arguably sandboxes).

What do you think will be the next trend?

I vote for old style adventure/rpg games to flood the market via indie developers. This will be picked up by the major companies.

For a while I thought it would be 3D brawlers like Bayonetta and God of War. But that doesn't seem likely anymore.

I guess the most likely next trend seems to be more frantic MMO's. Games where the combat is more than just clicking an opponent to death.

Of course, the dark horse candidate for next trend is extremely open-ended games like Minecraft, that are relatively cheap to develop, with endless replay value and very easy to update/expand. Since DLC is such an important aspect to games these days, having cheap/free DLC that really expands the gameplay (like Minecraft releasing new crafting recipes) is great value.

An old school RPG flooding that led to an RPG golden age? I'd have to quit gaming right there, because it would be the high point of the industry for me. I'd just have to die, screw the rest of the life accomplishments I was aiming for.

I never said they would be good. I am sure there would be a few good old super nintendo ones but most would probably be crap. Don't raise your hopes yet.

I'm betting a lot more motion-interactive stuff like for the kinect. So, I'm basically gonna cease calling myself a gamer here soon.

Rehashing old ideas/ games.

Any Nintendo Game series, Capcom Fighter (or fighting games in general), WoW expansions, System exclusives, sandbox games, RPGs ( I am looking at you Square Enix), the PS Move & MS Kinect (see Wii remote) and so on

Sorry, I had to.

Anyway, hopefully, it'll be RPGs.

Realistiacally, it will never ever change.
Anyone who links to a Relient K video is a hero in my book. Especially if it's off of Mmhmm.

OT: I personally enjoy some RPG elements, even if they are kinda arbitrary sometime. I hope that the industry starts to deepen the systems more so we get more Deus Ex style choice in approach.

Hopefully unrealistic shooters like painkiller. No clips, all guns at once and swarms of enemies. Good old fashioned ass kicking.

I think the trend for 2011 is re-inventing the FPS.
Would you look at all the FPS's coming out this year that are specifically trying to do something different/going back to the roots?

Brink (the king of the original FPS ideas)
Bulletstorm (back to roots style bad-assery)
Duke Nukem Forever (same style as Bulletstorm, but with a much loved old character.)
Bodycount (who knows)
Rage (Borderlands meets fallout meets motorstorm)
X-COM (50's style FBI FPS)
Spec Ops: The Line (sudden and random landscape shifts, along with vertical shootouts)
Deus Ex: HR (tons of new ideas mixed with old ones, both RPG and FPS style)
Killzone 3 (going for the most movie-like game ever)

And I'm sure there's loads more.

Oh, and 2011 could also be referred to as the year that multiplayer got added to literally eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevverything. If a single title comes out this year with no multiplayer, I will be very, very surprised indeed.

I think Metal Gear Solid 4 already won that

Well, kinda. That's movie like in the way that it's like 12 parts cutscene and 1 part game. KZ3 is going for movie-during game, hence the use of 3D effects and stuff. Or something.

I also am not always fond of the spate of realistic shooters that have come out recently. That said, I think the opposite (erm...unrealistic shooters I guess) dominating the shelves is not exactly ideal either, seeing as the market was spammed with them during the early 90s.

However, I wouldn't mind a fresh take on such shooters. I'd love to see the next step up from say, Serious Sam.
