This also basically Canonised the Big Finish audio dramas. This makes me... well... I mean, wow. Also, he's missing his cravat... That stuck out to me because of a certain comic...
So does that make The Light at the End also canon? X3
I'm pretty Sure Charley is in Light at the End, so maybe. I mean, when I say canonised the audio dramas I meant it in that he mentions a list of companions, all of whom are from the audios

As far as I know the upcoming special is going to explain just that. But it appears as if War Doctor is indeed a regeneration that comes between 8 and 9, and since he didn't regenerate as he normally does maybe it doesn't count towards his total (if the writers even care about that any more)? It's not too long until all will be revealed!

From what we've been shown by far, Hurt is a regeneration between 8 & 9 that The Doctor has essentially dis-owned (as much as you can dis-own part of your history) because that regenerations action's (stopping the Time War) were so against his core belief of helping people. Next Saturday may bring some clarification along with an answer to the whole "How many regenerations" question. My bet is the old limit was set by the Time Lords themselves to stop individuals being around to long rather then a biological/metaphysical rule.
This is pretty much what I was thinking. With Doctor Who being thrown at us in so many ways (didn't have these "Mini Episodes" back in the good old days) I was worried I had missed something vital. Thanks for the clarification!

I have to wonder if we haven't been focusing on the wrong thing. It's pretty obvious that the special is going to reveal some things about the Time War, most of which you can already piece together if you've paid close enough attention. But with that whole event in the past, and the Doctor actively trying to forget it, I think the real question is what does it have to do with the tenth and eleventh Doctors? I'm all for revelations about the war, but something has to be happening in the modern timeline for all this to be relevant, no?

Well, I'm excited for the 50th Anniversary special! And a brief return of Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor? Sweet!

He did get turned around from "I WILL ABSOLUTELY HAVE NO PART IN THIS DESTRUCTIVE WAR!" to "I MUST BE A WARRIOR!" in about 30 seconds flat. :p

Other than that though, yes please.
I think in that short, he realizes how much suffering there's going on throughout the universe with the war on, so he decides to fight for his people so he can steer them off the path of destruction. But given what we've heard about the Time War from the Davies era, we can't count on that working out.

This is a bit too short to make a full news post, but I figured you might want to get a glimpse of the special effects in store for the anniversary episode:
