Does anyone know if theres going to be a language barrier in the old republic, like in WoW?
Personally, I hope not. It'll add a lot to Role Playing elements.

Thoughts and discussion on this?

EDIT: For example, Horde character in WoW speak in Orcish as a main language, and several others depending on race. Alliance speak in Common, and other. So theres no way or either faction to communicate.

I think what hes getting at is that each race in the game is going to have their own language. While each of them should be able to understand Galactic Standard theres still room for the races to also be able to speak hutese wookie, etc.

Well in WoW, Horde will attack Alliance on sight or vice-versa so I'd imagine that's more than a language barrier.

Well, I thought most people in the Star Wars universe spoke Basic. Then their home language such as Mandalore etc.

Well they have intergalactic basic which most species speak in Star Wars, except I guess the Hutts and Wookiees.

I'm not quite sure and I was in a test group xP, the test I was on was quite small so I never really saw Republic players or tried to talk to them. However the General chat on our test server was shared between both factions, but I doubt it will be on release.

Considering how much of a "con" I put the language barrier in for World of Warcrap, I'd rather not see it in The Old Republic.

From a roleplaying standpoint it doesn't make much sense. The people on the Dark Side are the same people and the same races as the people on the... Light Side? They all have the same languages.

From a practical standpoint it's just a pain in the backside. I remember when I gave WoW a shot I had to play Alliance when I actually wanted to try Horde out. I couldn't talk to -any- of my friends unless I played Alliance.

Well in WoW it makes sense (kinda) but in the star wars universe it doesn't. Every race learns basic - it's just some species like wookies are incapable of speaking it - since the empire were once part of the galactic community there's no reason they shouldn't still be speaking it. Add to that force users naturally understand any language spoken and there's no reason the factions cannot be understood.

Of course they may put in a 'fluff' reason for why you cant communicate; maybe all communication is done via radios so when you stand in a crowded area with lots of chat going on you are just listening to the radio chatter rather than the people actually speaking. For security both sides use encryption and you can't hack the enemy signal, thus you are unable to understand them. It's not perfect but it gives a possible reason why you may be unable to communicate.

If they did have something like that i'd hope they'd put in an ability to talk to the enemy, just to try keep things semi-realistic.

It could be interesting to have the basic language every kind knows, and then the separate that only some races speak.
Not sure how it will contribute though..

Well, I'm about 90% sure everyone will be able to speak Basic. I think additional languages will depend completely upon the species you chose to play as. Twi-leks will speak Twi-Lek (not to mention their body language). Zabrak have their language. Sith have their language.

Of course it could be that the sith classes will know their own species language + the Sith language but that would be a bit weird...Bounty Hunters for example are technically allied to no one. It's more or less the same with the Smuggler class on the Republic side (which will definitely be well versed in Galactic Basic.)
