The Old Republic Script Is the Size of 10 KOTORs, 40 Novels

Star Wars: The Old Republic is the first fully-voiced MMOG ever, but how much dialogue does that exactly add up to and how is BioWare even able to record all of it?

BioWare isn't going to try to hide the fact that, aside from "ambitious," the best word to describe their endeavor to make Star Wars: The Old Republic the first fully-voiced MMOG in history is "crazy." The process of producing SWTOR's dialogue, from the writing to the recording and everything else between and afterward, has been a "crazy odyssey," wrote [http://www.swtor.com/news/article/20090710_001] director of audio and localization Shauna Perry.

Just exactly how crazy and epic an undertaking is this? Simply knowing that every single character in an MMOG speaks at least some dialogue is a pretty wild idea to wrap your head around, so consider these factoids: The script runs into hundreds of thousands of lines, which translates to what Perry estimates is "at least 10 KOTORs recorded back to back" and "approximately 40+ novels worth of content." There have been hundreds of voice actors on the project, who have recorded in cities around the world.

So how does one go about producing that much dialogue? Obviously it starts with the writing, which obviously comes out of BioWare's esteemed team of scribes. The story's written, edited thoroughly, and then worked into scripts for the actors. There things get complicated because the nature of the dialogue is non-linear, so there has to be a lot of careful direction and guidance for the actors to understand the context of the lines they're speaking.

Naturally, when you're working with recording dialogue, not everything makes the cut. "In the end, while the script calls for hundreds of thousands of lines of dialogue, we will actually have recorded much more than that," Perry wrote. "And by the time this project wraps, we will have completed easily over a thousand four-hour voice-over sessions!"

Crazy.

If this is as good as the hype, I'll be a happy man.

If the script is the size of 10 KoToRs, surely that implies that the game will contain an equal amount of gameplay? This is gonna be good.

Holy crap... how much space is this going to take up on my hard drive? Oblivion is the closest comparison I can think of in terms of voiced NPCs, and that took up 4.6 GB. Of course, that was back in 2006, and games have got a lot bigger since then. I think I saw somewhere that Dragon Age would take up 10+ GB, so I don't even want to think about how much space this would take up.

This is one of the few MMOs I'm actually interested in, and it looks like it's going to be good. Having it fully-voiced would add a hell of a lot to the experience, but I'm a little concerned that BioWare are biting off more than they can chew with this one.

I might try to play MMO for the first time by myself, always my friends tragged mi into MMO-s.
Star Wars is little sad nowadays maybe this lightens the franchise.

Everyone will sound the same.
Apparently you missed the "hundreds of voice actors" part, but I don't blame you for thinking that. My mind went there too at first.

God damn, though... I'm really hoping the gameplay compliments the cinematic quality this game will have.

EDIT:

My guess is that a lot of the voices will be server-side. Major ones may be saved on your hardrive, but bit parts are probably sent as you play.

EDIT 2: This is officially my 1337 post. Sweet.

Wait, if it is equal to 10 KOTORS and 40 novels, wouldn't that imply that a regular KOTOR game is equal to about 4 novels?

I don't know if KOTOR had that much content...

Did they release an estimated price for the subscription yet? Thats the only thing that might stop me from getting this game.

Why didn't he just say "4,000 hours of voice-overs"? "A thousand four-hour voice-over sessions" is way more than we need to know. I mean, who cares if you do them in four hour blocks? That's just extraneous knowledge. This is why most people in the games industry are not public speakers.

EDIT: Please stop quoting me on this.

Why are you complaining about more information?

For now, I refuse to believe unique actors for every npc.

Fucking hell. As long as they don't fall into the same trap Oblivion did in using a small pool of VA's then this is a very impressive achievement. If they've just locked 10 VAs in a cellar with 500 novels to record lines from at random then it's much less so. Given how unprecedented this is, I have no idea how they intend to maintain QC with this amount of content.

Perhaps a better question: how do you compress all that data enough to make the install less than 10 gigs without losing all the audio quality?

Ooh, I have an idea: they should forgo disc media altogether and just release it on a read-only USB thumbdrive which has enough space for it. Should be a quick install... heheh.

Esteemed team of scribes? You're kidding, right? The guys who hit the copy+paste button on the dialogue from KOTOR a few times for their last few games?

Ah I'm reminded of a younger me, when I first heard about SW:G back in '01. Those were the days, I was full of innocence and hope. Then it was all crushed quicker than the chess club's hope on prom night. Be wary of new MMO's, my friend, they have a tenacious ability to disappoint.
