Ok, this is directed at those titular oppressed masses that get continuously slaughtered in video games. I am asking the russian, german, japanese and other constantly-killed videogame populations how they cope with seeing their brethren get mowed down by the (typicaly american) player characters. Do you ignore it? Rage? Get sad? What?

I am not any of these gamers. But I have a close friend who is, and he says it doesn't matter because most of those games suck. (He's Russian by the way.)

well as an englishman it sickens me seeing my fellow englishmen getting killed all the time in games like....C&C? If you play as the soviets anyway. I'm always like "wtf?! that could be me being killed there! :O"

As a Russian, the most offensive thing about Modern Warfare 2 for me, was the American pronunciatian of Moscow.

It's important to remind yourself that it's just a game. There is no need to get agitated.

I don't know if Finland is in any game or Finnish people, Max Payne is based on some Finnish places and has lots of adds from here but I think the reason that most of the people getting hammered (the ones mentioned in the first post) are because the game makers are American and mainly the theme is war and the main bad guys from their point of view are the ones mentioned above (cold war and everything). It's only a game as YesConsiderably mentioned and isn't to be taken too harshly in my opinion.

Its like when MovieBob talked about the smurfs and if any belgians cared about how the smurfs are suddenly set in new york city. None of them care about something as stupid as the SMURFS. And since most developers dont really care about the story of their games [yes that is a bad thing] the russians, germans, ect. are just a blop of hatred for the player. [Yes that was a zp reference i know]

I think that games should take more open points of views. I'm not a member of any group constantly being slaughtered in video games (I'm Finnish), but I would like to see something different for a change. I mean actually playing as a German in WW2 or a terrorist in a modern day game would give the game more perspective and make the stuff you kill actually have a bit more character than a funny angry accent.

I have some German ancestry, none of which is tied to nazis with superpowers, nazis with insane technological prowess, demonic nazis, nazi zombies, or plain old vanilla nazis.

So no, it doesn't offend me in the slightest.

I suppose it does bug me to some degree that the English nearly always seem to be portrayed as the big bads in most American films (and possibly some games?) because of our sinister accents and whatnot. But i don't think of it as an ego-stroke on America's part. It's just the plot of the . People who get offended over stupid things like the ethnicity of the characters of a story or whatever are what create an overly PC society, urgh. No thanks.

We had a German exchange student about a decade back who got rather pissed off that Nazis are always brought up over and over again. I suppose that has to do with the fact that Nazism is more taboo in Germany than anywhere else in the world.

Well i know my grandfather was a German soldier in the Second World War. But I've never really been bothered by that. After all its not real, its just a game.

Eh I am Irish but I can imagine not many people getting pissed. It happen over 70 years ago, I am sure that most survivors don't even know what the game is and that most kids who do have relatives that were involved with the axis don't care.

I'm mostly German and I still enjoy mowing down Germans in CoD2. That being said, I feel much more connected to my American side.

A better question would be to ask them how they feel being opressed irl when their videogames get censored.

I'm half-Japanese, and I always think the bad guys in WWII games can look pretty badass sometimes. I always take these kinds of games with a pinch of salt. After all, I DID watch Pearl Harbor before. I even have one of those Japanese headbands (nothing to do with kamikaze pilots or anything, but are commonly associated with them). I guess all I can say is "Don't take yourself too seriously."

Part russian, but feel no anger or any negative feelings, after all most russians, germans, or terrorists are just a face painted on a bland blob of enemies for the players to shoot at.

But I am a bit peeved that Canadians are always sideswiped in video games, I cannot thing of a single game that has featured them in the main storyline.
Call of Duty 3

But then again that game was pretty terrible so it doesn't count.
