Okay, I bought The Orange Box (Retail). I had to reinstall it at one point and now there's a bunch of issues.

Half-Life 2 - Fails to load main menu

Half-Life 2: Episode One - Fails to load main menu

Half-Life 2: Episode Two - Works with no issues

Portal - Loads and plays fine, but there is no dialogue. There is music and sound effects, but I never hear any dialogue.

Team Fortress 2 - Works OK, recently froze, but no other issues.

Yes, my drivers are updated and all games update automatically. Half-Life 2 and Portal worked fine before I restored my PC. Any ideas?

I KNOW. I KNOW. I KNOW.
There are certain pieces of software that don't work with Source games. What anti-virus do you have? Firewall? What other background apps do you have running?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Are you saying that the orange box might not work with my PC?
I was going to buy it soon.
What else messes up the games?

If your programs running in the background cause conflicts, just turn them off temporarily.

Portal without the dialogue is like...useless. I don't think I'd've bothered my ass with it were it not for the Turret's and Gladis' amusing ramblings.

that would actually work, and is suggested with some games right in the manual

Yeah, try turning off any background programs. Also, if that doesn't work, try reinstalling, maybe Steam got a fart crossways and your files are corrupted or something, but I would have thought Steam would have fixed that automatically.

Okay, I have installed once before. Portal got dialogue back... once. I'm not running any other programs (Besides Steam and I don't chat or anything) and my anti-virus software shouldn't be an issue because HL2:E2 works just fine.

No. It means turn off your anti-virus and firewall when you're playing them. ;)

It matters. Trust me I know. What anti-virus are you using?

Right click the games that don't work in steam, click properties and verify integrity of game files(under "local files" tab). This should give you a list of errors if there are any.

For HL2 and Episode 1, right click them, click properties, click "set launch options" and add "-dxlevel 80" it could start the game, and if it doesn't then also add "-w 1024 -h 768". Both of these should be entered without the quotation marks and one of them should allow you to start the game.

If both of these fail, then I don't know because other than downloading the games again the above has fixed all my problems.

This might help, I just tried HL2 again, and this is what I got:

"Platform Error: module failed to initialize"
