Following MovieBob's Oscar feature [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/the-escapist-presents/561-MovieBob-Oscar-Show], I figure it would be only fair to have a thread dedicated to "The Oscars!"

First and foremost: Where the fuck is The Dark Knight you pretentious Hollywood pricks? Did the lack of, at least, a "movie of the year" nomination piss you off? It sure as hell pissed me off.

Second: Predictions? I'm with MovieBob that if Wall-E and Heath Ledger don't win their categories I expect some serious riots outside the building. Ledger's performance is nothing short of legendary and Wall-E is the return of Pixar to shape, from Childish movies to Child-Friendly movies. I honestly haven't seen Kate's movie so no clue there.

Third: Why the hell do we care so much about the Oscars? From what I understand their "voting" process is horribly flawed (nominations are based on who gets a certain number of specific votes first, not the most, etc), and biased (again, as MovieBob mentioned, their jury is mostly composed of old actors)... It seems to me that, say, a People's Choice Award would be far more representative of a movie's quality. Why do we worship Hollywood so?

Oh and, in case I forgot: Where the flying fuck is The Dark Knight you Hollywood douchebags?

It's up for some technical categories and Ledger is up for Best Supporting Role or something... But no, no "Movie of the year", no praise for Nolan's epic script... Nothing.

PS: Oh yeah, both Christian Bale and Aaron Eckhart were also criminally ignored for their performances.

What is up for Best Movie, may I ask? I reckon all the films up for it will be 3 hour pretenious crap that only art critics would enjoy.

I felt the Dark Knight was significantly overrated. While Heath Ledger's performance was excellent, and highly memorable, a posthumous oscar is pointless. Firstly, he's too dead to appreciate it, and secondly there are many actors who would kill for an oscar. For example, Michael Shannon who played John Givings in Revolutionary Road certainly deserves an oscar in my opinion.

Let's just hope that Slumdog doesn't sweep the board like it did at the BAFTAs.

Look in the first post, I linked MovieBob's feature about the Oscars, he talks about it.

That said, they are not bad movies... But I doubt any of them is at the same legendary level of The Dark Knight... Which deserved, at the very fucking least, a nomination.

The Dark Knight deserves much more than Slumdog or Benjamin Button. It is, simply put, the best movie of the year. I hate, HATE that Hollywood can't recognize that. In fact, I would also say that Iron Man was better than the other two movies I mentioned and it deserves SOMETHING.

I don't agree with everything he said but I do believe that The Dark Knight should have been up for something. I have to say that if it wasn't for Heaths act I wouldn't care that much!

Because except for Heath Ledgers Joker there really wasn't anything great about it. Good, yes. But nothing stood out.

Except, you know...everything else... Between the great acting of everyone involved (yes, I also mean everyone not named Heath Ledger...Ok, Maggie Gyllenhaal wasn't that great, but the everyone else was awesome) and the well used special effects, the story is brilliantly adapted, the movie flows perfectly between fast paced action and slower character and story development without ever disrupting said flow for the sake of either, there are interesting and complex plot twists and the movie develops nicely as a massive crescendo into an epic twist and finale... It makes you think (if you are capable of such I suppose) and makes you go "wow" at the action... Few movies manage to deliver both thinking material and impressive action scenes, and this one does.

The movie doesn't flow perfectly. It flows like a bunch of hammers dropped down a hill. One little story arch smashes into the next, with little or no time for actual character development or plot structure. Because of this lack of character development, Two Face came across as a bit of a wuss, rather than a dangerous menace. They tried to incorporate way too much into this film, thusly the only parts that really came alive (Heath Ledgers Joker) were severely limited.

Not only that but the plot, at times, was pointlessly stupid. Even by Hollywood standards. "I will blow up a hospital"... ok... so the Joker has gone and wired an entire fucking hospital up with explosives without anyone noticing anything? Was the plot written by a 9/11 truther I wonder? Then he wired up two ferries without anyone noticing? Knowing that one would be filled with criminals and the other with average folks?

So in this film the Joker is an invisible bomb expert who can carry 100s of pounds of explosives around hospitals without anyone noticing who also has the predictive powers of Nostradamus?

Caine and Freeman all gave wonderful performances, as they always do. Bales Bruce Wayne was also excellent... his Batman... not so much - Batmans fucking voice. Jeez what the hell where they thinking? Maggie Gylenhall appeared to not realize they were actually filming at the time and thusly gave very wooden performances. Look at this! [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFAwV0DQ1CE] Why am I reminded of Anakin and Padame in Star Wars: Revenge of the Horrific Acting? I have seen better performances than this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpR-UtQ5UZ8&feature=PlayList&p=A46FD282DF57769B&index=8] on the damn A-Team. When she says "you make your own luck" I physically cringe. Watch this from 1:00 [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRG1tWQN6e8&feature=related]. The superb performance of Ledger only serves to demonstrate how bad the other dude was. This film might have actually been better if The Joker was played by a less powerful actor.

It was a fun, leave your brain at home, and watch some explosions film (a-la Michael Bay). But oscar material? You have to be fucking kidding me!

I felt The Wrestler not being nominated for best original screenplay, best director, best original song, and best picture were the worst Oscar snubs.

Why wasn't Gran Torino nominated for anything?

Haven't seen the wrestler, but from what I hear, it deserved a couple nominations too.

Well Heath Ledger is The only lock, the rest is up for grabs. I hope Brad pitt doesn't win anything though.

Why the fuck would The Dark Knight get an oscar?, it wasn't even that good of a movie.
Your avatar makes that infinitely hilarious for some reason.
What avatar?
Isn't that the Joker?
I dunno if it's the same one from the movie or not - I haven't seen it.
Well it was the joker, ain't now.

While I believe Wall-E will win in its catagorie, I'm going to be contrivershal and say it shouldn't.

Wall-E is a great movie, but anyone who has seen Kung Fu Panda knows that it is more deserving. Some of the best fight scenes I have seen in ANY movie, let alone an animated movie.

In my opinion the Drk Knight doesn't deserve to be up for anything. Slum Dog Millionare was my favourite movie of the year.
