If your religeous thats fine. When your the head of the Catholic church, where catholics look to you for advice, saying

"You can't resolve it with the distribution of condoms...On the contrary, it increases the problem."

To a country gripped by an AIDS epidemic is almost criminal. One fifth of Africans are catholic so what he says holds a lot of weight. Quite where he gets condoms help to spread AIDs from is beyond me.

This seems rich as the pope didnt ban condoms until 1964. A bit late seeing as they have been widely used for around 400 years.

Does the pope need to join the modern times?

Urgh, it's like he's saying 'AIDS is bad, but sex is worse!'.
I can't wrap my mind around how he can say things like this.
He's only going to make matters worse.

I'm glad he has finally visited a country in need.

But he screwed it up.

I heard about this story from the Hour. Yes the Pope and the Vatican need understand that old traditions just don't apply to the world anymore and are just holding the Church back.

More than holding the church back, its putting peoples lives at risk.

"...a responsible and moral attitude toward sex would help fight the disease"?

If AIDs itself isn't already enough of a reason for people to start having a responsible attitude toward sex what chance does anything else have?

You could have the right attitude but if your partner doesnt youre screwed. It will take more than condoms to fight AIDs in Africa but its still an important tool hes demonising.

You have the best name ever btw.

Anyone think a bird could do a better job at this point?

So let's see... You go into a poor country where lots of people are starving or dying of AIDS, and you tell them that condoms aren't the solution. After this, you get on your private PopeJet 3000 and fly back home to your little kingdom of PopeTania, where everyone bows to you and kisses your fingers.

Good job, there. Way to be a religious leader.

Interesting little tidbit, but I'm pretty sure my church is one of the "competing" evangelical churches, heh. I didn't realize religion was a competitive business. If that's what the Pope thinks, it might explain a lot.

It doesn't help that women are often treated as second class citizens there, in essence, babymakers and houseworkers.

There's also the spread of rumours that having sex with a virgin is supposed to help cure you of AIDS, which then leads to large counts of rape, thus spreading the problem further.

Yes.
Seriously, if you can't stop the sex, at least make sure people don't fucking stick it in whatever is warm and available without some sort of goddamn protection.

The ONLY place I EVER agree with the church is the whole "you shouldn't fuck everyone and everything" bit, but condoms are absolutely incapable of increasing the problem. That doesn't even make any fucking sense.

Palpatine would teach this ************ a lesson.

You've been foiled, I'm afraid. It's all a conspiracy.

And I would laugh my head off if Pope-patine caught AIDS while over there. We already know he would never use a condom, since they apparently increase the problem. Wow, they should teach that incredibly helpful and not-at-all-a-pack-of-lies information in Sex Ed classes from now on.

I thought that was the last Pope.
To be honest, I care less about the Pope than I do about the snake my dog had cornered on the porch today. He barked for like three fucking hours.
That snake has singlehandedly ruined my day. The Pope doesn't have that kind of power.
Maybe it was. All the Popes look the same... Old. So, the new Pope is Darth Vader then? He sort of looks like Vader did without his helmet on.

I have a dog that likes to bark. I sympathize. We keep a spray bottle filled with water around to unload on his stubborn face when he's going nuts.

[conspiracy mode] But AIDS is fake, it's all a conspiracy from Big Pharma! [/conspiracy mode]
Yes, I've honestly discussed with people like that. It's just....impossible. Good thing is people don't listen too much to them (well there was this group who denied AIDS or something, they really all died of AIDS related things, COINCIDENCE??? nope, but dámn funny), people dó listen to the Pope, and he's a crazy bastard (as this shows). Yay for the world.

Of course, cause I am ze freekin' pope.

Interesting article on the BBC news website - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7951839.stm - and it's good to see countries like France and Germany condemning the fella for his words.
