The problem with dystopian societies

I was just randomly looking up dystopian works of literature on wikipedia, and I noticed something: Almost all of the novels involve some communist/fascist society repressing individuality and lumping all of society into an indistinct culture-less blob. But then I started thinking about how if one really wanted to control and manipulate a populace, shouldn't you instead raise everybody by themselves and let them grow to have humongous pompous egos so that they forget all their social skills, thus preventing from forming groups and thus preventing them from rebellion?

Just a little thought I came up with. Not many people at my school are into talking about these kinda things, so I thought I'd put it out here and see what you guys think about it.

The error here is that people with huge pompus egos tend to like and hang out with each other. Believe me, I would know.

Interesting theory. I'll keep that in mind when I finally conquer you puny huma--

I mean...Interesting theory, good insight. That'd take a lot of work though. Random gradeschool flashback, ever read The Giver?

No, but it sounds interesting. But again, even in this book culture is repressed. What I'm saying is that if you really want to manipulate the populace then you should not remove culture, but overload it, so much that people become gluttons to culture and just have so much ideas thrown upon them that they get so distracted with figuring themselves out that they forget how to interact with others. You raise them so that they are convince that everyone is a snotty arrogant dick who plans to kill them, so that all the members of society lack the ability to trust each other and are convinced that people are dickheads. So in other words, you raise people to think that the outside world is just like the xbox live community.

@title: I'm going to go with, "They are dystopian," for 500, Alex.

@topic: You're not going to be able to control people with huge egos, even individuals.
It's best to just stupify the masses.
This was the whole goal of this thread. To get you to post on it. I feel really special now.

But my point is that people are so caught up with how important they are, that they forget how to interact with other people. You raise them so that they think everyone else is a dickhead, spoil them, and tell them they're special. You know, kinda like what the school system is doing now.

People who hate everyone else and are paranoid tend to, you know... bomb places and go on shooting sprees. Since their behavior is so unpredictable this would only make the population unmanageable and is more likely too result in anarchy than anything else, wouldn't it?
