Now, I've just recently picked up a PS3 and I've been playing COD4 on it. Now initially, I couldn't get it to display anything but 720p despite having a 1080p TV and a HDMI connection. After googling the issue I finally got it to work by deselecting all other options. Now it seems that if I try and play something else that doesn't support 1080, it displays in something like 576p unless I manually switch 720 back on.

My question is, is there some way of making it select the best resolution without this dickery involved and having to reset it each time? Does every PS3 1080p game have this problem or is it just COD4?

It's hardcoded in the game to diplay at 720p. You have to disable 720p display entirely if you want that particular game to display in 1080p.

How odd, my PS3 always just plays the game at it's best. It won't play all games at 1080p though, I'm just impressed that you got COD4 to 1080p to be quite honest.

Most games are designed with bizarre native resolutions and are then upscaled to whatever you set your PS3 to. So even though it will say that you are playing CoD4 on 1080p it is still the detail of the native resolution being blow up. You are not accessing any higher quality assets from the resolution increase.

The only thing I avoid is any kind of interlace video setting since that always looks like crap.
