The Racism Card

Once again, something really weird and/or reprehensible has happened in Texas. I found this looking for a current event for my Pedagogy class. I'll let the headline speak for itself.

"Texas teacher claims she couldn?t have fondled black student because she?s racist."

Yep, her entire defense so far is that she is simply far too racist to have touched a 6-year-old black girl. I suspect this won't work out too well for her. It should go at least as well as, "I couldn't have killed her, your honor! I'm a misogynist and don't associate with women!"

Sorry to my fellow Texans since this will almost surely start up some state bashing, but I figured it may as well be me to break this.

You know you might joke but that might work in Idaho. I'm kidding, sort of.

More on topic. I don't see how this is going to help her. All it dose is give someone ammo to attack you with.

Actually it makes sense. You deny a greater crime by admitting to something else terrible. You say something you'd never otherwise admit, to prove to everyone else your innocence.

Not that any smart juror will buy it, but a dumb one might... And that's all it takes.

And you know texas ... So it just might work . Someone file this under , " it's so stupid , it just might work ".

OT: i really hope this doesn't work . Imagine the consequences . The next guy to go to court for rape might just say he's gay in hopes to get off scott free .

Edit: i just realised , this confirms my prejudice about texans being racist . I'm black and i recall ( at least in canada ) that a lot of black people wouldn't dare set foot in Texas out of pure fear . Now i'm sure not all of the things people say about texas is true , but i'm sure as hell not going to set foot there to find out .

Except, well... Back in slave times, when a rich white slave owner denied fathering mulatto children....

I DO know Texas. You apparently do not. Having moved to Texas from the mid atlantic, I currently live in one of the most diverse, multicultural cities in the North America, and the largest city in US history to elect an openly gay mayor.

Prejudice (noun): 1. an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge.

Cause we all know the best way to fight prejudice and stereotypes is with MORE prejudice and stereotypes. I'm sure as you say you are black that you would take offense to someone claiming their prejudices about black people were confirmed when they saw a black guy eating watermelon at a KFC or a news story about police catching a criminal who turned out to be black. Please do not perpetuate prejudice and bigotry.

I think the intent of that statement was not that racism=homosexuality but that a similarly stupid defense could be mounted in the case of a crime against a women if the accused claimed to be gay with no other evidence to clear himself of wrong doing.

I feel odd defending a guy on not being a bigot in the same post I accuse him of being a different kind of bigot. I think that is enough to get me to stay away from forums for a while. Good bye

Well here's the thing, Texas is a big state with a huge population. To put it in context, it is more populous than the entirety of Australia by several million people. While racism does exist throughout the whole state, most of Texas is no worse off than anywhere else in that regard. Most. Vidor, Texas, has absolutely earned its reputation of particularly bad racism. I was actually a little surprised to find this happened in the Houston Metropolitan Area, though with a population density that high, there's bound to be some crazy people.

I really wouldn't suggest making a policy of having one event compounded by hearsay and rumor enough to confirm and entrench prejudice against a large group of people. If everyone operated that way, I'm sure this next article would have confirmed black stereotypes the world over. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-57580136-504083/men-pulled-ak-47-over-chicken-order-mixup-memphis-police-say/

Also, no, this will not work as an excuse in Texas. Were you to speak with the average Texan about this, the sentiments would probably trend toward "Never see the light of day again" and "Death Penalty."

The nimrod is saying that she wouldn't touch a black person because black people are eww, so therefore she didn't bugger this child whom happened to be black. Its stupid either way.

Yeah, being racist doesn't preclude sexual attraction. In fact, when sexuality and racism intersect, "attraction" is best described as "obsession": Asian fetishism, Interracial porn and Mandingo parties (both of which are very popular in the former Confederacy), the spike in demand of Arab porn after 9/11. . . .

Texas...just...Texas.
Uck.

OT:
I find it rather funny, if sad, to see this 'defense'.

I can't WAIT till white people are the minority and start using Affirmative Action and 'The Race Card' to help themselves out.
-Wonder how hard the NAACP will shat themselves.

Nobody pointed out that while it's illegal to molest a student, it's not illegal to be a racist. So this makes sense legally, and only legally, in that she's claiming she didn't commit a crime by copping to something that's not illegal. She's still going to get fired, ostracized, and everything else that comes with being a racist though.

Very true...but then, is being a racist going to get you in that much hot water? It's not like it's rare.

Silly Texans! When will you ever learn!? Lolololololol.

.....

Sorry, I'm an Oklahoman. We're obligated to make fun of Texas any chance we get, even if we know it's not justified.

Texas is actually a great state with an unfortunate reputation for crazy conservatives that, thanks to the sheer size of the state, always manage to pop up. I'd say it's actually the most liberal state in the South.

If you think Texas is bad, you should see the shit my state tries to pull. Look up Sally Kern.

I'm sorry in advance.

Is admitting to racism grounds for immediate dismissal from a teaching post/teacher's union in Texas/US? Or at least cause for suspension from active duties? Someone in texas know?

And i lived with a white supremacist/neo-nazi (briefly.. also im canadien.. yah they make racists in canada too >.<), i can more or less say that in their heads that's actually a legitimate point.

I shouldn't have looked it up,I knew as I did it it would upset me. Just...I honestly don't know what to say,just....ugh.

*Edit* Yeah.... Isin't this teacher kinda f'd either way now? Either she goes to jail,or she loses her job, right? Even if she didn't molest the kid, please tell me she can't admit to racism and keep her job as a teacher...

I would rather lose my job for being racist than be convicted of the "ultimate crime" of child molestation. At the moment the entire case is a "she said, she said" of a 7 year old accusing a 61 year old of doing something.

As much as I would hate the teacher to get away with it if she did it I would hate it even more if she was convicted for something she didn't do.
