some areas might struggle, but I personally think population increase in non third world countries is harmless, as we have plenty of space to convert to farmland etc.(US) Also I think you shall see populations start to level a bit, I think japan and many european countries have a negative birth rate. The us is just at 2.1 per couple so that's scarcely increasing the pop.

Well, I'm glad so many people have opinions on the subject. To clarify my point of view, I understand that there are a lot of things that "can" help, but will people really make the right decisions? I mean really, there are still people who think there was no holocaust.

I guess the real questions is, how do you get people to care? When someone finds something catchy like this Mayan calendar bull or Y2K, the masses jump on board without a question, but when you present them with real issues (like global warming, population growth, or the limited sources of fossil fuels), they either tune out or dismiss it as pessimism. Instead, they'd rather worry about whether a doll is talking to them about Islam.

Thanks everyone for their input, especially those who disagree. Debate is my favorite way to come to rational conclusions. And I welcome any more ideas.

By the looks of it, earth could suffer from Overpopulation soon enough. I mean, whit the advance of medicine and so on, if a plague would start spreading through the population, medicine could cure it before it could to that massive damage, and no massive disaster can kill enough people to depopulate the world.

Now let's take a look at this:

"The year 2,010 AD: 6,823 Million people
2,020 AD: 7,518 Million people
2,030 AD: 8,140 Million people
2,040 AD: 8,668 Million people
2,050 AD: 9,104 Million people

Until finally:

2,060 AD: 1.2 Million people..."

Now think a bit, this could happen in our days too, but the thing that might prevent it is the fact that medicine is advancing, same has ways to save people from disasters etc.

Now all these thing's point to the fact that in the near future, Earth will have problems whit it's growing population. Aka, time to pack and move to Mars.

I plan on becoming a cannibal and being a nomadic hunter if there's a food shortage. Man will be my target. The most dangerous game.

Or, maybe I'll just hide in my kitchen.

Dunno.
i may have to join you there, we could even combine our kitchens! i have plenty of.... microwave...

I think I have to disagree with your claim that food is the scarcest resource. I think as long as you aren't used to filet mignon every night you'll have plenty of food to go around for years to come. Which is why we grow our own food.

Ah, but that's the catch, isn't it? How many of those spoiled people do you think want to sacrifice their way of life for others? People starve now, but few seem to care.

Also, I'm not saying food is so scarce right now. I'm referring to the future. It can become scarce quite fast if we're not careful. We'll need land to both live on and farm, so space is more limited than most realize. Yes, I know some people live on more land than they need, so that space could be used, but that goes back to the same point: people are spoiled and won't give up their lifestyles. While the population and resource shortages may not harm humanity in and of themselves, the panic/riots/wars/etc. that they will lead to could be terrible.

All speculation, of course. Maybe people don't suck as much as I think they do, but I'm not counting on it.

Here's my compromise with religion folks - if the world doesn't end in 2012, let's all just shut up about it already, okay? Honestly, they all said the world was going to end during WWII, and that Hitler was the anti-christ. Well, he wasn't, and it didn't. They all said the world would end in 2000. It didn't. Now if the world doesn't end in 2012 (does it happen on Eastern or Mountain time? I'm just trying to set my schedule here) then let's just stop already.

The original poster has a good point - the human race is breeding itself into extinction. We don't need Jehova to come and end it all, we'll deplete our resources long before he ever gets the chance. So let's start being smart and leave religion and apocalypticism behind.

Personally, I'd find it amusing if the world ended in 2012, because then the crazy conspiracy theorists will have one win, and no one will care cause we'd all be dead. Or better yet, something that might have seemed catastrophic hundreds of years ago, but now is no big deal...Mayan zombies maybe?
If the world were overpopulating to a point where it was going to destroy the world, I'm sure people would do something about it, horrible and/or unspeakable as they may be now.

In about five billion years the Sun will enter it's Red Giant phase, by then it is likely that the human race will no longer be around, if we are then we won't have long to build a ship and get out of the local area.

While it's 'possible' that the Sun could unexpectedly begin its Red Giant phase the chances are so unlikely it's irrelevant. It's a bit like the chance that all of the atoms in you body might rearrange and turn you into a giraffe, not impossible but highly unlikely.
Fixed!
The sun is currently a red dwarf. (sorry, couldn't help myself!)

So when 99% of all the humans are dead, the others will have plenty to eat :)
I could never resort to canniblism if that what you are gettinf at, but atleast the food 99% of the world eats will be ours that is good, unless all animals will goto heaven on 2012, than that will suck.
Then we have all the dead bodies AND their food. And their freezers, to store their dead bodies in.

I think one of two things will happen. The resources will be stretched so far that the people who can afford food will begin hording every crumb, leaving the much larger poor class to starve. A few billion gone, then the cycle restarts.

Or, WAR OVER THE FOOD.

The most tragic war-crime would be destroying a field.

as I have stated. CTHULHU DESTROYES THE WORLD! We petty humans are just fiddling with pick-up sticks compared to him. Even though Cthulhu is made up. OR IS HE?!

Pff.. don't blame everything on western culture.
Its actualy them asians imitating us who fck it up, becuase they breed like rabbits.
Africa Would be a problem too but fortunatly they still kill each other and the land is still ravished by all kinds of plagues so its not a concern right now, more or less.

Western culture also has introduced SEVERAL controll mechanisms that keep our numbers in check: Death by drugs, traffic accidents, obesity, smoking, murder etc.
Things the Asians who copy us have yet to implement.
That's the most ignorant shit I've seen on these forums.

First of all, NO ONE is imitating anyone. Secondly, yes there are a lot of people in China, but think about just how big China really is. Sure America also big, but they have only had a few hundred years worth of history, compare to the several thousand years the Chinese had to accumlate the population they have now, the 1 billion population didn't just suddenly come in the last century you know.

Also speaking of population control, here's an actual program implemented since 1979.

I know that one. Policies like that don't tend to be met with public approval though...
